Your house is burning down and you can only save 1 box?
« on: February 07, 2017, 11:21:57 AM »

lets hope none of us are ever faced with this but ....

your house is burning down. everyone has got out safely but you only had time to save 1 box. Which one did you save and why?

maybe you only have 1 box so it was an easy choice. Somehow i think most people on this forum have more than 1 ;)

So I'd better start. I'd grab my 114 in G. i love the sound of the 4stoppers and I always thought G was a bit squeeky untill i heard it in the lower octave that you get on the 1 rows. Almost all the music i play is in D or G so I'd still be able to play a huge chunk of it in the right key and the rest id play in the wrong key :||:

Although our Hero, Theo, says it's "like the Klingenthal boxes", it would have to be my Hering G/C! Not just because it might be my favourite box, as even though it's the one I'm playing just now, I'm not sure that it is. But because it's the only one that I've heard of which isn't in Brazil!

That would be a tough choice (and I might dither long enough that I wouldn't have time to save myself let alone one box...); however, it would have to be the D/G Liliput - it's such a sweet box.

Mind you, the others are insured (but I'd have to wait for another Streb...)

would depend on how far you had to run with it and what other possessions you were trying to grab!  for a high speed departure I would grab a  dg pokerword  but if speed of departure was not so important it would be a hohner gaelic as it will do everything that may otherwise require several boxes

My old Bb/Eb Club 1.
Mind you, my tears, at the thought of any of my boxes burning, would probably extinguish the flames  :'(  :'(

Probably the little Hlavaček 1-row Heligonka - the box I currently play least of all of them.

I'd take my fiddle.  If I still had time, and hands to spare, whichever box was closest to the door.

This is easy for me. It'd be my little Oakwood model 2 - hardest to replace, easiest to carry, loudest to hear if required as some form of distress call. The scenario does however bring to mind a different question, which I'll post elsewhere to avoid (wholly fair) accusations of thread drift...

My D/G Sandpiper, as I can't be buried without it, but don't worry - Mrs Brownbridge has Granny's violin and the Liliput (aren't I thoughtful?)

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

I 'd have to grab my Hohner 1040 that was pass down to me, it's not my best or favorite.
And with my other arm I'd have to haul out a many of the photo albums as possible for if I made it out alive without them, I'd be dead and left for the birds if I was just holding the box!

Then I'd have to run down and get the fire truck (:)

When she was young my daughter told me about having a dream (nightmare?) where our house was on fire and I sent her back in to get my Shand Morino.

Wow! I'm stunned that you only have one box! Fair play to you. I've been following and using your mandolin site for a few years and have seen you playing many mandolins, tenor guitars even a banjo. I thought you'd have loads of boxes :-)

I wish I could say the same for the other instruments I play! A handful of mandolins, several hands full of tenor guitars, a couple 6 string guitars, a tenor banjo, a 5 string banjo, a fiddle I never play, but only one box. Granted I took a chance and got a custom layout 3 row 18 bass box that is good for playing in a bunch of keys, so it will keep me busy and my brain tied in knots for a lifetime and then some.

Glad you've been enjoying the mandolin lessons!

Headline in local press..."wax pan combustion burns down accordion repairer's home."
Chief fire officer said " we thought we had things under control, but didn't know about the 15 or so celluloid covered accordions in the spare bedroom..".  (:)

I'd get safely out of the house and then claim on the insurance.
