Small Red Bellows Tape Repair
« on: February 08, 2017, 08:55:43 AM »

I'm almost embarrassed to admit to this...Last week I took off one of the straps of my Dino Baffetti and when I put it back, I didn't fasten the buckle correctly and the "prongy" thing - (I know there's a technical word - no idea) has been scraping the tape since :-[The damage is about a 1/4" scrape at the bottom of 3 bends of the bellows. I see on ebay Bernard Loffet is selling red tape by the meter. Is this my best option - just stick a small piece on each bellow end, or will the edges of those bits rub off and peel?

I feel a right........

Thanks

Mary

I think it's all about personal choice. Will you be happy with the look of three small pieces of tape? I would always choose
to replace the whole length on the ribs, which is not a difficult task.

Mmm. Thanks.  Yes, I'm in UK - in Somerset.  I suppose it's best to remove the tape first, rather than taping the new on top? I don't think it's self adhesive is it? How do I remove the tape safely, and what glue should I use for the new please? (I'm so bad at technical stuff, sorry. My other half is excellent at this type of thing though, just needs to know what I want.

Just in case any one really wants to know, I believe the generally accepted term among leather workers is the "post". (Just like the button I'm about to hit....)

I'd have lost money on it being called the tongue Malcolm :(  doubtless regional name variants are rife but the 'universal arbiter' weighs in with 'prong'    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckle

No. I don't beleive everything claimed by Wiki-whatever but thought Mary might enjoy being in the right area to start with  ;D

I wouldn't want to argue with Wiki-whatsit, the font of all human knowledge.  :-[
Nor would I want to argue with a pedantic, but very kind leather worker who has done some nice work for me over the years and insists it is called a "post". Mind you, he still calls a melodeon a concertina..... >:E

I always thought it was called the 'tongue', or possibly 'tine'

I've always known it as the buckle thingymejig. Still not too old learn I suppose.

The great thing and whole idea of wiki is that if you disagree with the terminology or want to augment the detail - you can.  I've always called it a tongue, too.

I believe that most, if not all, the Italian manufacturers source their bellows tape from the same manufacturer, so there is a good chance that the colour will match exactly 0 so buy enough to do the whole bellows end.  There are quite a few threads about taping advocating several methods, but with the textured tape you must remember to lay it all in the same direction or you get a strange zig-zag pattern with the bellows closed.
