...On D/D#, or any "inside-out" box including C/C#, this is not the case.

I assume you mean "outside-in", or as I would see it, any semitone box (other than D/C#), played "outside-in".

(It also allowed Irish players of an earlier generation to indulge in chromatic ornaments and runs that have come in for criticism, but this habit has, as others in later comments have pointed out, fallen by the wayside.**)

It was of its time, part of the evolution of getting to grips with what was a
relatively new system at the time.
I think what you describe was confined to a small number of musicians.
Irish box playing has come a long way since then.

Edited in acknowledgement of Stiamh's edit.

I think by "outside-in" he means playing the outside row as the "home" row and the inside row for accidentals. D/D# played "outside-in" would then be standard pitch, but played "inside-out" would be a semi-tone sharp.

I misunderstood the confusion...

You are correct, I got mixed up.

The language is of concern to me.

No offence intended, please don't take any. In the way that Jewish people are allowed to tell Jewish jokes, I allow myself to say things like that because I consider myself an Irish box player, regardless of my ethnic origins.

Don't worry about it. I understand exactly what you meant and where you are coming from...my concern was
how others might "feed off it", so to speak. I know that might sound weird but you will know what I mean.
Glad to see there is another "Irish box player" on board!  (:)

This is how you should play a D/D# box: Joe Cooley 1924 - 1973  ;)

Mine, which is the twin of the one Joe Cooley is playing in the video, is still in unaltered factory tuning, and sounds just like his too - to my ears and according to (an astonished the first time he heard it) Des Mulkere, who should know!  ;)

It only has basses for (inside-out) Eb, though Joe could also play (outside-in) in D when "concert pitch" was required.

Though Finbarr Dwyer preferred to play his like it was a B/C, so it came out in F: Finbarr Dwyer with Brian McGrath GeantraĆ na Nollag 2007

Cooley, Dwyer; opposite ends of the style spectrum. Legends both. Say no more.

Richard, what you say is true. But I did not intend to express any disrespect for Irish music or players. I'm a "defender of the faith"! On several occasions I have called people out for comments that I felt - intentionally or unintentionally - crossed the line. Here, I should have kept my reaction to out-of-place chromaticism private. So I'm now going to edit my post and if others wants to edit theirs, the offending words will disappear.

I have edited my post (Reply #20) and I sincerely hope that is the end of it.
Your knowledge of Irish box playing and all matters relating to the semitone system and your
willingness to share that on the forum is recognized and appreciated by all.
