Tony Hall's 'Slow Air'
« on: February 14, 2017, 09:40:52 PM »

I've somehow managed today to discover Tony Hall's album, Mr Universe.

As a noob I've so many questions. First, how is one person able to sound like that?

Second, and more importantly, there is a track called 'Slow Air'. Another site lists the album credit for the track as 'Gow, arr. Hall'. I'm guessing 'Gow' means Niel Gow. But I'm having difficulty tracking down the Gow tune that Tony is riffing on. Can anyone help?

Hi Robert,

I'm guessing you mean the air ... Mrs Hamilton of Pencaitland or sometimes called .... Mrs Hamilton of Pitcaithlands

here's Paul Anderson fiddler playing it brilliantly on (it's claimed) Gow's own fiddle ...

cheers!

Tony Hall has ten fingers on each hand...  ;)

No - seriously, Tony has the same number of digits as the rest of us; it just sounds like he has more. But he is an absolute master of playing right-hand harmonies and counter-melodies. There is no multi-tracking involved or any other deception. If you get the opportunity to see him live in concert, do go - his playing is superb, not to mention his dry humour. There's no-one quite like him.

along time ago before I knew or indeed had ever heard of Tony I decided to go to a 'Tony Hall melodeon workshop' held in a school at a folk festival.  As I walked down the corridor  I heard what I thought was a group of people playing extremely well - on entering the class room instead of the expected room full pf people I was absolutely amazed to see just the one man with the big curly pipe sitting in the corner making the most wonderful sound on a humble hohner pokerwork.

That was my introduction to Tony!

It's by Nathaniel Gow, not Niel Gow.  (Nathaniel knocked his father's socks off as a composer).

Most people only play the first two parts - there are four in all.  Page 35 here:

I first learned it with all four parts because that was how the moothie player Iain Grant did it - I was surprised to hear the abbreviated version without that incredible rocketing scale near the end.

I can't figure out how to quit but I will no longer check this group and have deleted all shortcuts to it.

Thanks for that, Jack. That Cameron collection is amazing. Much appreciated.
