Anybody recognize the players in this old pic?
« on: November 14, 2017, 12:10:51 AM »

Saw this image online today. Wonder if anybody happens to recognize these fellows? Unlikely, but worth a shot.

I don't even recognise the melodeon models, let alone the players   :o

Here's another interesting one, courtesy of eBay. (Not sure I should be doing this without copyright owner's permission, but too good not to share....)

I think it's either the group photo from the first Strategic Accordion Limitation Treaty talks or Melodeons at Witney...(but given the lack of beards probably unlikely to be the latter...) >:E

I suspect yours, Malcolm, may have been taken at the OK Coral, just before the almost forgotten performance and subsequent (and better known) audience reaction......

It is amazing where some of these pictures appear from, if only someone had written on the back in pencil.......

I have a photocopy of the "mass melodeon" picture on my wall in front of me as I type this, pencilled on the Back of the original which was viewed online are the Words "Chicago 1939" (possibly 1936, its rather faint)

It might be worth sharing these pictures to the Facebook group 'Traditional Irish Button Accordion' - there's a lot of expertise on historical boxes and players amongst that membership.

I thought there was something a bit weird about Malcolm’s photo then realised that some of the participants were smiling.....

They look like a couple of Italian Americans at a guess (so maybe somebody might just possibly know on an Italian-American family history research forum?), in which case the 3-row with Stradella bass is likely to be a G/C/B, and the 2-row looks like it could be a Paolo Soprani (you'll see some old ones with a large brass nameplate like that, though the large white feet are unusual, maybe added) that's probably in G/C (seeing that they're both fingering the same notes). At least, those systems would be typical in Italy, and became so in France.

I note the sartorial standards were rather higher back then  :|glug

Wearing a tie while playing melodeon = an emergency shoulder strap.

That nearly proves the pencil point* Henry, 1939 was the Chicago World(s?) Fair IIRC Hope these were not part of that insidious Melodeon Temperance Movement mentioned elsewhere!

*sorry, no pun intended

... 1939 was the Chicago World(s?) Fair ...

Chicago was 1933-34, it was New York's turn in 1939-40.  8)

So it was Steven, my humble apologies, looks like crossing the rows on this keyboard has similar catastrophic results to the boxes  :|bl :|bl  art exhibition on 1939 row not Worlds Fair  :|bl :|bl

Nazi Rally and first Atomic pile going hot for the first also notable in 1939 but no melodeon critical mass noted
