North East Melodeon Group - Sessions in Newcastle
« on: February 18, 2017, 08:43:52 PM »

Our inaugural session will be held in central Newcastle on Thursday 9 March - starting at 8pm and lasting until 1000 – 1030pm. It will be informal and is intended for all abilities and type of melodeons. We just turn up and play, learn tunes from each other and, as necessary, split up into ability groups, melodeon types etc. We will be led by Dave Gray. We will also discuss and agree the format, arrangements, frequencies and dates for future sessions.

The venue is St Dominic’s Catholic Club, Crawhall Road, Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 2BX.

There is no charge for the venue provided we buy from their bar. Dave’s fee will be divided between those attending to keep it simple and hopefully, low cost. I’m kick - starting this session but hopefully, it will be self-managing in the future.

Details about the venue and transport are included in the attached document.

Nigel.

PS This event is different from the "Melodeon Playgroup - North East I" which is only meant for beginner levels.

We meet on a monthly basis from 1900 to 2230 hrs. Initial dates are 3/4, 8/5 and 5/6. We have an initial tune book. We aim to learn a number of tunes per session, each one led by a group member.  Details are also given on "North East Melodeon Group" facebook page, which currently contains 3 tune sheets for use during our next session on 3 April.
Tunes are initially slanted towards DG boxes, but players of all types of boxes and abilities are welcome.

Could someone who is on Facebook let me have the tunes another way, please? I stayed away from Facebook initially as it caused some early troubles for teachers with students tracking them down, and have never found a need to join since. I'd love to come along when I can.

This is a pity, Ann. Please PM with your email address. I'll include you as a member and you'll receive emails from the group, including the tune book and future editions. We communicate through facebook and email because some members are like yourself. I can't attach the tune book to melnet posts which could occur if I used ABC but this will not happen for a long time!

Thanks for coming, Pete. I'm sure I speak for all of us who were there, when I say that you made the night! I hope that you will be able to come again, and often.
Welcome also to Samuel, another smashing addition to our little group.

What's on the playing agenda?

Hi Pete. You attended (I didn't) the last full session and Monica's Slangpolska and Polperro Bay were on the Agenda. They will still be there if we didn't complete them. Otherwise, we move onto a new tune on our  list. In forming the Group, we agreed that each person would teach a tune to the others and it would be incorporated into our evolving tune book. I sense that you'll want to teach us one tune or even more!

We had a look at both those tunes, but moved on despite their unfinished state (I didn't get to September's gathering). I had a look at the Bear Dance with the others. I'll dig something else up - hoping to get there.
Most of the stuff I play is too squeaky for a 2 voice DG. But I could look at La Marianne with a countermelody. Sweet tune, not too high.
I'll attach it here in case someone wants to look at it - but I can't guarantee to get there until nearer the time. I know that isn't helpful, but teaching is full on, and I'm being observed next week.
