Tune of the Month for March 2017: Beetle on the Wine
« on: February 28, 2017, 09:33:45 PM »

Well, here's a tune that if you don't know, you jolly well should! Written by Dave Whetstone, famous, well as famous as melodeon players get, for a stint with the Albion Band in the 1980's, and around where I live, for the classic lineup of the Cock and Bull Band. Made a rather cracking album "recently" (about 20 years ago) called the Resolution - full of self penned tunes; Dave's a cracking writer. And one of my favourite players too. But enough drooling.

- Beetle on the Wine - 32 bar reel written by Dave Whetstone of Albion Band/Cock and Bull Band fame. Here played by... me: https://youtu.be/ZoT3Bx1VGnw?t=2m (2nd tune in the set, starts 2 minutes in). Great tune, ideally suited to a 2 row melodeon.  I'm playing it in G on a G/C here (sorry for the confusion), but it would normally sit in D on a D/G.

Apologies, no music for this yet, but hopefully an ABC guru will be along before too long (pretty please!). Normally played in D on a D/G, where the basses work just beautifully.  Perhaps we'll get a D/G version soon too? In the meantime, you can find it on Spotify, played by Dave in the Albion Band, and also Paul Scourfield's recorded a version too.

Enjoy

Clive

Can't find it at any of my usual haunts, probably need one of our gallant transcribers to sort it from your recording

It's the second tune of first track on the Albion Dance Band's Shuffle Off! (1983) where you can hear Dave himself playing it. Unfortunately, that's one of my old vinyl discs I haven't ripped yet so can't even offer a pirate mp3  >:E

Just had a few listens and done a quick sketch of most of the right notes. This won't be accurate and doesn't have chords yet. But hopefully it will help someone who wants to get going quickly.

And just noticed that I haven't got the right title, oh well. Still it's a start. Nice tune. Sorry Clive that I've not got all the notes right yet. If anyone wants to make suggestions before I have a better chance to listen I will happily make the changes with no offence taken.

I had a listen to the Albion Band version on their 2009 album Dancing Days are Here Again and came up with the transcription -

My copy's in a box somewhere under the bed in the spare room - and I haven't got round to digitising it yet, either.  Must dig it out.....

Ashley reissued Shuffle Off with one of the other Albion recordings a few years back in a package called "Dancing Days are Here Again."  Here's the cut from the CD, on Facebook.

So weird - I've played it twice - it has an annoying ad, but it plays. I'll link it again, just in case this is better: https://youtu.be/00a2SvMf9Lw

No, I can't see it either. It's because it's a video taken from an album recording I think - I think the record company's contract with youtube must have ended - result = lots of orphan videos on youtube that no-one can play. Annoying. Paul's album (with this on it) is on Spotify and presumably similar services though.
