Theme of the Month for March 2017: Marches
« on: February 28, 2017, 09:38:53 PM »

We've done these before a few years back, but it's due a re-run! And it is March, so this month, the theme is Marches. (Groan). What's a march? Something you could imagine marching to, basically. Could be in 2/4, could be in 6/8, could be in a few different time signatures. It's a bit of a loose definition!

Cheers,

Clive

Two quite different types of march!
https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/argentat-marchesmp3
https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/teddybears-picnic-nellie-the-1

When I play the second set out in public there is always at least one three year old marching around to it.
The first set is still work in progress, I am going back to Correze in July and hope to have them polished by then.

Nice tune!
I think I know it from melodeon greats album by peter wiper which  he calls the 79ths highlanders & champion marches. Same tune ?

Looks like it would sit well on a one row in D with no G# to deal with, I might have to try learning it, as I have always like it .
I even tried looking it up but could not find it under the title I knew.

A quickly botched 'Men of Harlech', I didn't realise before today what a fun tune it is.

I will forever think of it as the 'woad' song.

Jimmy Shand recorded it on a hohner Erica 2 row in the 1970's accompanied by Jimmy jnr on piano. it is  currently available on the cd  MMCD0103 Sir Jimmy Shand plays old time classics.

You won't have heard this one before. It materialised years ago when my kids were having a birthday party in the backyard and I played melodeon for a game of musical chairs. Now I play the march for my little baby grandsons and enjoy watching them moving around to the rhythm.

A new March - just the dots for now - I'll record it in the next week or so.
Mothers' Day March - haven't decided on best tempo yet - probably 140 bpm

Here's a couple of fairly well known (by me anyway!) french marches, popularised by Chris Wood/Andy Cutting at the height of their powers. Florinda and Organdi,

https://youtu.be/cNcmEOy2rMc

These are both written by Gilles Chabenat, french hurdy gurdy ace, and on his Bleu Nuit album. Sedate marches that just keep going. Lovely.

Played on the Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb.

Cheers,

Clive
