Micheal Darby O Fatharta
« on: March 14, 2017, 03:24:44 AM »

Has anyone heard of the one-row melodeon player Micheal Darby O Fatharta? He has just released a CD entitled "An Rithim Reidh" that I purchased and absolutely love!  You can listen to samples here:

All of the melodeon playing is done an a "D" one-row, with the rather unusual voicings of the LH reeds only.  Before hearing these recordings, I thought the LH sound abhorrent, but I must admit I really found it to be quite a good fit here!  This album features nice, steady, straightforward playing, which is actually a bit of a rarity in ITM these days...

That's his second one. You can listen to samples of his first one here.

I got an error message too.
I did a search for it on CDbaby. Try this:

https://www.cdbaby.com/cd/michealdarbyofatharta

Weird- it's the same URL, and the "bad" link above works for me now.  ???

Also listened on Spotify...

I also really liked the 'steady, straightforward playing' which is done so well that he makes it sound deceptively simple, yet is full of subtle nuances and gentle ornamentation. It reminds me so much of the lovely anglo concertina playing of Mary McNamara.

No links worked for me either.  But going to cdbaby through Google does.

LH voicing is odd indeed! Not yet a convert; it might take me some getting used to.

But some wonderful tunes. Thanks for the info!
