Fancy buttons
« on: March 27, 2017, 11:09:57 AM »

Morning all. I wonder, does anyone know where to get Paua shell buttons with brass rings? I don't really want to have to make the bloody things myself, cutting pearl is a lovely job but the dust is very, very bad for you.

Cheers,
J

Kay Albrecht might be the man to speak to.

Cheers John! I've just sent him a message. Of course, it was on an Albrecht that I first saw this style. Ideally I'm after a screw type rather than the deep sided ones, but I'd adapt the design if necessary, as these just look SO good!

I'm guessing this might be the rare Melnet question to which the answer isn't "Try Charlie Marshall?"... :|glug

The ones on Kay's boxes he makes himself I'm afraid ... I don't think you can get them off the peg.  Would it be worth looking in to some of the fancy bits and pieces that are used to decorate guitars?  I bet there's something around the right size being made somewhere!

Cheers all - Yes, it looks as though I'm going to have to make them. Big guitar dots is a good start - I can get them off Petradura or Small wonder. Might have to get the brass done at an engineer's though as I really don't want to have to start milling stock down on a lathe

Stock brass tubing, insert dowel . leave enough space at the top for the abalone dot. Glue dot in position, polish when dry, then cut off dowel. You could also drill the dowel to take a screw, before gluing disc.

Well that's a very interesting site indeed. I like the adjustable thumb strap.
