They seem to come up on American eBay fairly regularly. Usually though, the keys (or the keyframe) look to be badly warped, and I know from experience that extracting the axle from these smaller Hohners is a PITA job. If I ever saw a decent one, I'd be interested.... (the dark side is calling me back >:E  )

It looks like it has minor row in addition to the usual bass and major chords. I have an accordion with the name Geraldo that has the same bass layout.

A friend of mine has one, it's been to morris practice a couple of times. I never know whether to run towards it in rapturous wonder at it's pokerworky loveliness of flee in fear of the devil's wardrobe....

Does it come with built-in percussion like a Pokerwork melodeon?

I have come across these occasionaly but not for a long time.  the bass is stradella ( same both ways) 8x3.  bass, major and minor chords.?BbFCGDAEB  . Presumably the bass end is interchangeable with the pokerwork melodeon  ?

No its not interchangeable, it is much larger.

7 1/8 x 12 1/4 inches according to a catalogue of the time, as opposed to 5 7/8 x 11 inches for the pokerwork. It'd take some "adapter plate"! :o

How does the weight compare with a pokerwork melodeon? I have a PA playing friend who'd ;ike something that's light enough to dance with.

I restored the reeds on a mint Student 1 recently. The ends were about the same size as a PW and it had the metal corners etc. It was a lovely little instrument...and ...well..you can play in DG...*and* other keys without too much trouble (think of it..what novelty) ... >:E *and* in the right hands you would struggle to tell the difference between it and a melodeon ...just thought I'd put that out there. PAs aren't all bad.

I am pretty sure that quite a few of the old Hohner pa's are Pokerwork size. My 1939 Student 1 is 28/15 cm and weighs 3.2 kilos. The 1938 Alpina next to it is 31.5/18 cm and weighs 4.4 kilos. The treble ends are very similar to melodeons and sound the same-ish.
I suspect that the Alpina is similar to a Student 3 but with different decor.
The Student 1 basses are fund/chord in FC GD, whereas the Alpina has a stradella machine inside and goes from Ab to A in fund/major/minor.
Both have 3/4" keys, but those on the Student 1 are much shorter.
They both sound great and have very meaty basses. The simplicity of build and lack of registers or stops makes them lighter than any modern pa as far as I know.

I restored the reeds on a mint Student 1 recently. The ends were about the same size as a PW ...

With the  addition of a proper  >:E fingerboard assy plus correcting the  reeds/tuning  >:E they can be redeemed into something useful. It's a fair amount of work, but has been done.

The bellows and frames will fit a melodeon chassis. There does seem to be two slightly different case sizes around this time, with maybe 1.5 mm difference, but I have fitted Student bellows and frames directly to a 2815 - even the pin holes lined up.

I've been meaning to check, from the dimensions posted above, whether the pokerwork PA could accept a Club fingerboard etc in a similar manner, but haven't got around to it.

Hi tiposx, yes the Student 1 is the same size as the one I mention. I have no idea where it had been kept but it looked brand new. It really was quite something.

Hi Roger T
I love those video showing the work you do btw.
I would love to see a mint Student1. My  3 pa purchases have been a challenge to get working again but then they were very cheap indeed. They seem to become very neglected - but it makes for a very rewarding hobby when they return to life.
