bought another liliput !
« on: March 27, 2017, 07:08:48 PM »

Hi guys bought yet another liliput ............not a lot of info looked a rather faded case and thought i could see a little rust on the reeds and had been tinkered with bellows tape, that looked like one side black gussets but must have been the flash ,shabby straps etc
and hohner plastic valves ,

So i wasn't really expecting a playable instrument but as my grandmother used to say never judge a book by its cover, the chap did say was played by professional musician and it's obviously been really well set up

Airtight speaks super quick and tuned with slightly more tremelo than a standard liliput that's actually really nice ,reeds really clean all the work is excellent and i'm now rather embarrassed at how poor my attempts were on the project ,getting the reeds to speak so fast perhaps the hohner plastic valves do help and i thought they would sound clacky on the bass but no, so must be how its setup and she also has a metal connecting bar/link ? between the reed blocks perhaps that aids the punch an resonance

As its untouched I,m just going to book my other (as new lilliput) into theo,s for tuning and a hohner valve as there's obviously a real art to setting melodeons up

I've bought one too and would like to change the reeds to C#/D or B/C but don't know where to source these. Does anyone have these? - might need a specialist but trying to keep the cost down with this one.

Hi i borrowed an irish b/c and thought perhaps to convert my project liliput but couldn't get along with two playing styles  so abandoned the idea ,i intended milling a standard set of reeds b/c reeds with new or altered reedblocks omitting the incidentals ,i don't think one can buy the smaller liliput reeds but i have heard mention of a PA that has the smaller reeds but they seem rather rare and cant remember the name of it ,i,m sure someone on here will know

Hohner Imperial 1, I think. There was one sold on German EBay for peanuts, last week.

Hi yes its 440 I was very pleasantly surprised ,one of the pictures looked like the gussets had been blacked or replaced but it must have been the camera flash ,I zoomed onto the reeds and they looked like they had little deposits but they are really clean must again be the camera .

I have a spare set of lilliput bellows so i thought take a punt  but they've just been re taped newish bellows gaskets airtight ,my son speaks german so had a little info and have been playing all day lol just instant and barks
what's a little disconcerting is my mint one is untouched and good ,darrens restored one is better (professional accordion tuner) but my new rather beaten up one is awesome ,it also seems to be in tune with itself ?

I kept swapping between boxes, but shes a keeper ,its definitely highlighted my limited tuning skills I now think there's a magic dark art to "don't know how to describe it"blending the tones ?darrens sound nice but not in all positions if that makes sense?
For the occasional reed tweak i,m ok ,but I,m going to get theo to do the swanky one ,darren already made me an offer for the "ugly duckling" NO

Hi guys on a personal note i'm not going to purchase anymore melodeons with the intention of getting them up to scratch
I've been restoring banjos ,guitars etc for more years than i care to remember lol and pride myself on the setup and playability
and in my humble opinion ,to do anything well one must have a passion, aptitude but most important "experience"
For the same reason people have brought me their vintage vegas,I will send off my vintage melodeons

There have been quite a few comments on the subject of tuning which are relevant.  Basically the prioblem arises from the equal temperament system which means that the finished tuning will be beautifully in tune for some intervals but slightly discordant for others.  The art, which comes from experiene is to tune to a tuner and then gently tweak the discords to an acceptable level in all combinations of intervals.  The process is helped to some extent by the tremolo of two or more voices, leaving a level of uncertainty as to the exact pitch of a note!  The downside is that a single voce box, such as a Lilly, will always have some disonance especially when playing away from its home keys.

You can go on with the learning curve, doing spot tuning until you feel proficient and comfortable with doing a full retune - that's how all the "professionals" got their experience, too.  After all, we need a constant supply of new fettlers.

If you have a mint one cant you just swap the good reeds into it and sorted should be no problem with a liliput as the box are pretty standard and I would not see any tuning problems. If there are just revert. Oh  and send all the left over lili bits to me for christmas. You can the start collecting Victorias I seem to have acquired 4 lately.( oh dear)
kind regards

Hi i,m thinning my instruments to the ones I actually play,so just one melodeon only and I really wanted something exotic unusual or rare, for my collection as i cant comfortably play a heavier one but theo said
Quote
What do you want the ideal box to do that you don't get from the Liliput?
great point and the answer "nothing" the lilliputs perfect 2 voice club tuning lightweight ,great melodeons .I started the melodeon as i found the duet concertina wonderful but thin sounding, and the lilliput is an oom pah monster in comparison, and exactly what i wanted

The craving for more horsepower is addictive irrespective of need, I really should know better at my age lol I want to keep the swanky liliput all original and I can play the beaten up one while the swanky ones being fettled.
Workshops now finally closed and its a little sad but also rather liberating ,if you don't have the tools.........I just ran out of time so even the project lilliputs boxed up to sell

oh and this has completely baffled me , if you brought in a trombone possibly trade in or for repair after 1996 please contact its finished
