Spoon Leather
« on: March 27, 2017, 11:47:36 PM »

I got some leather from Charlie at CGM with which to reface the 3 spoons on my project melodeon. Does the smooth side or the fuzzy side get glued to the spoon?  Thanks

The glorious leather is the sealing material. Therefore glue the felt to the pallet. You don't want the open texture of the 'fuzzy' (felt) side to seal the air leak. Sorry just realised you are talking about spoons, but I am sure the same rules apply - the bit that seals the air entry is the smooth stuff. Therefore stick the open stuff (fuzzy) to the spoon?

Yes - what P&T said. Glue the felt side to the spoon and the leather acts to seal over the vent hole.

If previously the old leather facing was thin, you will find that you will need to adjust the angle by gently bending the spoon shaft to compensate for the increased thickness of the leather/felt combination. Otherwise the spoon will leak air.

I'm confused now.  Looking at leather reed valves, pallets on an old Hohner or even CGM felt/leather material, they all seem to use the rough side of the leather for the seal.

I think P&T & Steve where talking about felt and leather combination, so smooth side of the leather has been glued to a felt backing already. Then you glue ( lightly) felt to pallet, leaving rough side of leather facing holes in sound bd.

Is the felt part even needed here?, or should I say is it a benefit on this lever valve?

OK thanks, I get it now.  I was assuming leather only, which is more usual on spoons.

Actually, my intent is to use leather only, as was on the spoons when I got this box. Unfortunately, the original was so old and dried and brittle that I could not tell which side, smooth or fuzzy, was glued to the spoons.

Then I should have left the answers to the experts, sorry. Please ignore the advice on fuzzy side, as I was talking about the combination stuff. I have only used that, so I shooting in the dark on leather only.

Glue the smooth side to the the spoon.  Leave the suede side to firm the seal.
