Simple portable in-ear monitor?
malcolmbebb:
Played a couple of Morris events lately where the background noise has prevented me hearing myself, although the dancers could hear me.
I was wondering about a simple belt clip self-contained in-ear monitor system suitable for Morris use, only really needs to be treble.
Anyone use or come across anything along these lines? Or silly idea?

This kind of kit (only one example of what's on the market) might work for you as the basis of personal foldback - https://www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_powerplay_p1.htm?ref=prod_rel_366390_1
Obviously it's not a complete system and needs to be considered alongside whatever amplification and/or box mic'ing you have.
Hope this helps as a starter.
Cheers

In my brief sortie into the world of sessions I started using a Honeytone guitar amp that clipped to my belt. It's battery driven with an ear piece and a clip that would normally fit on the neck of a guitar. It works in as much as you can hear yourself over the wall of sound that is mass melodeons and doesn't need any other power source...

How have morris musicians managed perfectly well for generations without any electronic earole devices!
On a practical level it helps for the musicians to be up wind of the dancers so the wind blows the sound of the music to the dancers but not the sound of the dancers to the musicians

Don't forget that each of those "mass melodeons" is being played by a player who has just as much right to hear themselves as you do. So should they should all get amplifiers too? ::)
(I've heard of this happening with stringed instruments. A mandolin player got a small amp to hear himself; months later the room was full of guitar amplifiers...)
If I walked into a session that was that loud, I'd just walk out again rather than add more noise.
