Limit button travel on Hohner Corona, Compadre and Panther.
« on: March 30, 2017, 09:53:49 PM »

I currently have a Hohner Panther 3-row in GCF and wanted to limited the button travel so that the buttons would be almost flush with the keyboard. I decided to share my solution.

This solution will work for Hohner Corona, Compadre and Panther with plastic keyboards.

I removed the keyboard back cover and noticed that the original felt was too small and the arms had made indents at the edge of the felt, making the G-row buttons go down too far.

I ordered some 6mm professional self adhesive felt from a company called "selbstklebe-filz.de" based in Germany. I removed the original felt and cut the new felt much larger so that the arms of the G-row wouldn't hit the edge of the felt.

Now the buttons are flush with the keyboard when pressed, greatly improving playability.

The felt can be purchased on ebay and is sold in various sizes.
Here is the link for the A5 sheet I ordered (select 6mm):

I have attached a picture of the modification.

I do this sort of thing at the shop a lot, but I use a slightly thinner felt and cover it with leather as the metal arms can pound into the felt after awhile.

As you suggest, this is fairly straightforward when the back of the keyboard removes easily. I did it on my Rey Del Vallenato (another plastic-bodied Hohner model) but stuck a thick piece of hard leather over the existing felt, for the reason Kimric gives.

Although I only play at restoring, I've done this a couple of times, using good quality but worn table tennis rubbers, cut into strips. They normally come on a sponge thickness of around 1.9mm and then there's the thickness of the rubber. They are designed for regular impact and resilience. No point using cheap rubbers from ready made bats as they will disintegrate but if you know any serious table tennis players, they might let you have a cast-off rubber.
Remember that I am not following the usual route here, but they are very easily peeled off again.

Thanks Nick. I come from Essex in England. I've been playing for just over three years, but have been concentrating on the Texmex / Conjunto style of music - mainly Polka's, Redova's and Waltz's.

Nice. Have you checked out the Mel Bay Tex-Mex book/CD that is available?
I get tons of those guys in my shop here in California. You should have pretty good luck picking up a used 1950's Corona II in decent shape where you are. The older ones here are pretty worn or expensive.

Thanks. I've been learning from youtube videos and slowing down songs to find the notes and create an accordion tab. I've sent you a friend request on facebook, where you can see my videos of me playing.
