Tune of the Month for April 2017: Morpeth Rant
« on: April 01, 2017, 10:40:28 PM »

Nice simple one this month folks; cracking tune, the Morpeth Rant.

The first tune of Bill's set here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLlwpBnpF6Y ; mysteriously not many other videos on that though, so lets fix that!

Cheers,

Clive

Here's one I made earlier....... this is about 5 years old and was a quick one-take so isn't by any means perfect.  I'll try to find time to a do a current version; if nothing else it will be interesting for me to compare the two.

Thank you to Clive for using my earlier take as a demo,  a couple of different takes here, a 4 stop, and a less swung, brisk, rant speed version.

I'd dismissed this as a tune to learn but on second thoughts it would be God one row practice. Are the triplet upbeat as hard as they appear? Guess there's one way to find out.

Those triplet upbeats all on one row are a fantastic exercise in bellows control - especially if the tune is played quite speedily!  The temptation on a 2 row to nick the initial A from the G row on the pull is strong though.

No, I don't think so. IMO the easiest triplet on a single row: A and B are on the same button, B and c# both on pull.
For me the hard part is getting it up to speed.

I'm a fan of The Session as a source of ABC (it also converts the ABC to the dots for you). Here is an interesting comment in the entry for The Morpeth Rant.
Quote
This is a truly great tune and originated in Northumberland sometime before 1800. It is not a reel, but a rant. The rant is the National Dance of Northumbria and has specific footwork. There is actually a longways dance called the Morpeth Rant, though we believe that there were originally a whole collection of dances referered to by this name. Certainly if you go through the manuscripts, you find several versions of the tune. Matt Seattle has produced a book (called the Morpeth Rant) where he looks at the various source versions of the tune. Up here, players distinguish between versions of the tune as listed (Morpeth Rant or New Morpeth Rant) and the version which owes much to the fiddling of New Pearson (Old Morpeth Rant). Kathryn Tickle plays both but perhaps too fast for dancing.

The definitive version, for me, is on a recording by Alastair Anderson, Willy Atkinson and others called Good Old Boys and made at Whitby Festival. It is slower than a reel and less dotted than a hornpipe but swings nicely and goes like a train. I would strongly advise players to try and listen to Northumbrian players ranting before getting too fixed in the way they play it.

And here is Matt Quinn and fiddler playing it...after Jack Robinson

And a slightly slower version by Basil Bunelik ( ok it's a PA...but he plays it very well).

I believe Morpeth Rant is one of the two tunes that is shown in 8 different versions in Barry Callaghan's Hard Core English book. (the other being Stoney Steps)

Many southern English musicians used to know the Old Morpeth Rant as the "Gloucestershire Morpeth Rant" presumably because a version of it was found there, but in a session at one of the last National Folk Festivals (who remembers them?) somebody played it and there was a Northumbrian fiddle player who identified it as the Old Morpeth Rant. Until then, many of us southerners didn't know that was its proper name, but we all do now!

Surprised there's not much here yet - so here's my contribution. Two versions: Tom Hughes and the one more commonly played. The astute amongst you will notice that I fudge the low C in the first version by playing a bass note. Really must get my box altered to the Anahata system. The second version comes complete with a glaring mistake; oh well.

Just to support TOTM, which seems to be a bit short of nutrition this month. Good tune too.

Am I right in thinking that the unwanted accents might be worsened  because of too high a setting on the recording level on my Zoom?

Nicely done, and the box sounds great too. That accent is peaking, so yes, the recording level is maxing out.

Thanks Jack :-)

Here's my effort; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtvfhTtMSRA played on the Bb/Eb Preciosa in ... Bb and Eb.

Not long in the month to go; would be nice to see a few more recordings, so don't be shy! :-)

I find it a really tricky tune - especially the B music - but here is my offering.

What several of these videos show is the first signs of "melodeonisation" -- a tune being changed (bodged?) to make it easier to play on the box, or to fit in with the basses.

Or at least, according to the version in my head that used to be played by Northumbrian fiddlers...

Point taken Ian. I, personally, have no idea how faithful the version I know is to the original (if such a thing definitively exists?). Could you point us in the direction of the dots (or any other form) for such a version if you know of one please?
Many thanks,
Tim

That's great Tom. A very different B part to those submitted so far; there are so many versions of this tune it's really good to hear another one.
