Tunes from Yann Fanch Perroches' web site
« on: April 02, 2017, 01:13:09 PM »

I have just spent a lovely couple of hours going through the website of that brilliant Breton player, Yann Fanch Perroches. On this site, there is a page of sheet music to download of several Breton pieces, some traditional, some he has composed himself and some by other composers. Here's a link: http://www.perroches.com/tablatures.htm

I particularly like this tune by John Whelan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvZwQ2S_1BI
and this composed by Yann Fanch himself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeAfkRJvXOQ

Has anyone tried some of these?

Oh, man, like I needed more songs to work on!  In other words, thanks!   :|||:

Oh you are naughty, Arty. I'm having trouble enough learning much more simpler tunes. Lovely tunes, though.

Excellent. When I say I've run out of tunes again, remind me of this place.

I spent the best part of last night listening to the original composition of "Trip to Skye" by John Whelan which then led me to his albums. Wow. Another one which was under my radar.
Is "Trip to Skye" worthy of a nomination for MTOM?

Good idea Budge, I have put the suggestion on the Tune of the Month page. Thanks for the idea  (:)

Here is the link to the score for Trip to Skye. By the looks of it playable on a DG, as it doesn't actually use the F Nat, though it does mention an F chord, which won't be possible.

I showed the sheet music for Trip To Skye to my diato teacher, so it is now my homework for this week.  Not finding it at all easy, but a lovely melody.  Below is a link to a slower version, which I think suits the tune.  :|||:

Good luck with it Maggie, I haven't buckled down to it yet but I will. It would be interesting and helpful to hear you playing it when you feel ready.  (:)

Aye, will post a clip when I can play it more smoothly.  Might be another week or two 'though!   :|||:

The "Trip to Skye" by John Whelan has earwormed me since yesterday when i read it on here , so the only way to get it out of my head now is to 'murder' it out on a box!
It seems quite a tricky little number particularly if it's going at any speed , so i thought i'd record my first go at it today with the version i have in my head! (i only learn by ear - so no idea what notes or what i'm actually playing) so it still needs work but at least you can see how it sits on a diatonic melodeon ... in my case an A/D LOFFET , now going back to work out what notes i should be playing! (and sort out the cockups!) :o
cheers  Derek

I knew you should have left it with me....  ;D

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

I've long admired Perroches playing - which helped make Skolvan one of my favourite Breton bands, live and recorded. Must get round to mastering Trip to Skye - though perhaps not at the pace Skolvan play it on their CD Come to the Dance - back in 1991. They don't play it in a friendly key either...
I heard a story that Perroches first came to melodeon on a school exchange visit to Ripponden (or somewhere near), West Yorkshire - when he encountered Pete Coe. If true, yet another reason to thank Mr Coe !

Arrghh ..Trip to Skye (John Whelan) played by Skolvan is driving me mad  :o.... but i've made progress and i am happy now its all clicked into place... Melodeons drive you mad sometimes, anyway here's a link to an unlisted YOUTUBE as i'm playing along to Skolvan in the background, I realise again why i have a lovely Loffet 3 voice AD (Breton made Graet e Breizh) for tunes just like this! :|||:

Just need a band full of Breton musicians and a Bombard player and i'm away!

Well.... that phrase about biting off more than you can chew .....  I think that I am certainly not a good enough player yet to do this tune justice!  I have been trying to learn it for a week now and it's going to take a good while longer to play it at speed and smoothly.

Here is my version - closer in speed to slow air and not flowing yet, but I will keep working at it

Maggie....I don't think you have bitten off more than you can chew at all. And you have done this in a week? Blimey...it will take me longer than that, that's for sure. You have got the tune under your belt now, just play it through a couple of times every day and the speed and confidence will come.
Well done you!!!

Thanks Arty, that's encouraging.  I seem to be surrounded here by excellent musicians so it is good to know that I am not the only slowish learner!   :|||:
