Why are the bass notes on the left hands of inexpensive Hohners so farty/foghornish, when the right hand usually works just fine?  Something to do with pressure from a given volume of air, I'd imagine.

Usually worn out leather valves they are bigger more likely leather and on some models roll into the bellows folds .Quite often the treble side is historicly given more attention also

If you compare Hohner basses with typical Italian basses there are several differences that have an effect on the sound.
Hohner have only two reeds per chord, Italian typically three. Hohner low bass reeds have a wider, thinner reed plate, and the design of the reed block is much different.
All these influence the sound. 
Maintenance comes into it too.  Hohner basses can often be improved by careful attention to tuning.
