Diagnosing Hohner one row Vienna sudden fault
« on: April 27, 2017, 12:03:04 PM »

Hi folks

Wonder if any of you could perhaps point me in the right direction ?

I have recently started playing cajun on my old German one row Hohner Vienna in C, 4 stop, but it has suddenly developed a nasty discord on the chord push. It also rattles a bit more on the push, pull is fine..

I am wondering if it is a simple stuck reed as it has happened once before and righted itself. I am out in the sticks in Portugal so no local help available. Any advice how to pull box apart and fix, I've never pulled one apart before ? (:)

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Robin

My first guess would be that the wax is shot and the reeds are becoming loose and thus off pitch.

Could it be a loose reed plate? When you pull it's being "snugged" against the reed block, but when you push, it's getting blown away from it ?

Just a thought.

Yes it could be failed wax but it could also be that one of the push reeds is cracked.

Simple to look pull each of the four small metal pins gently out with a pair of pliars and the bass end will pull off the bellow. Two on top two below. There is a seal between wood end and bellows so be gentle it will be on the bellows and should go back  no problem. You will see the reeds , work out which one it is from the buttons. You can see the top ones you are looking for cracks in the wax or the small valves fallen off you can only see the top valves the other is on the inside .Might be a reed broken off you will see missing tounge metal.Depending on the situation on how confident you are you can deal with any problems . If its too serious you can always put a piece of tape over the offending reed or better the hole that the air goes through.Wax is heated to fix cracks temp Can use a sealing wax  glue or mastic if desperate use something that does not set rock hard as you will want to redo latter dont spill any on the reeds or valves. It is usaully quite simple or evedent. Reassemble the end to the bellows in same way and check for leaks you will know if less air . I am answering the question when back in range go to a repairer if needed.

I have successfully done emergency repairs on reed-plates that have come adrift from cracked wax using a heated wire to remelt the wax and reseat the plate.

Using other adhesives will probably make your repair-person cross with you.  So if you do the fix with Sellotape, chewing gum, silicone sealant or whatever, set aside a little extra time to listen to the resulting lecture when your box finally gets into the hands of a professional.

Agreed "wax is heated......" but needs must and if up a hill in portugal with a can of putty but no wire then let them moan. What is obvious to one person is not to some one with limited knowlege get out the blow torch its a melodeon let it burn.No seriously I can tell a missing reed or valve but if you dont know what to look for its best to proceed with caution. For example easy to turn the two wire keys to remove the blocks but I would say one in ten break off and you up a creek if up a mountain. The melodeon is a simple instrument really.Let us know the result. You can buy a new one on ebay and repairers earn a living fixing the ones we break.LOl
attachments is this it?

Offers to purchase invited sorry for the delay but I had to find one in C to post the tutorial

Can use a sealing wax  glue or mastic

Yeah right.
Did you get that in "How to ruin a melodeon 101"?

Using whatever gunk comes to hand sounds  dodgy  and with the potential to have everyone shaking their heads and muttering "I told you so", but I believe a soldering iron can be used for reforming  wax and wax is easy to get hold of if needed. Get confirmation from a wiser man than me first. Lester and Theo and friends  can put you straight. If you haven't got one, they're cheaper than chips, weight for weight (soldering irons, not fettlers, that is). Easily and quickly sourced through ebay or amazon.

You can use straight beeswax and a lighter to heat the tine of a fork or any metal object. Any wax will work for a temp repair but regular candle wax is oily in nature and does not stick well in the long term ,but it is not hard to remove for later repairs.
Silicone and other glues are not much use as they will not stick to the old wax and it can be a pain to remove from what it does stick to.

I've used a modellers soldering iron, but carefully. This is really too hot and needs something to give a cooler end. Can somebody remind us how this is done please?

I run mine through a standard room light dimmer, more than capable of sorting a 25W iron.
