Sessions are as varied as people's faces.  As Lynn suggested, they take-on the 'personality' of their musicians, so even the same session can vary from week to week.  .....    I go to sessions chiefly in the hope of hearing something new, to seek inspiration, or to pick-up hints about playing my box.

I enjoy sessions for a variety of reasons -  but the main one  is to play with friends and others who enjoy the same style of music. I feel uncomfortable playing party pieces ( i.e if no one else joins in  and I'm left playing alone ) but usually enjoy those played by others, especially at massed Festival sessions where the odd solo piece can make a refreshing change -  and have particularly   enjoyed your contributions at Whitby Frank.

The Gardener's Rest too! Spent many a happy hour in the Red House but Linda retired - a major blow to the Sheffield music scene. The Sheffield University Ceilidh Soc session was Tuesday evening at one time but I was more of a singaround "not a folk club" Friday and Saturday participant.

Don't worry - whichever you do, the richness of experience will far exceed whatever you can imagine now  8)
+ I've heard a lot of good stuff about SOAS. You won't be disappointed...

Ollie, you shouldn't go anywhere near Sheffield mate cos you'll never get any work done and you'll probably be seconded to a proper morris side and end up having fun. Have you considered Birmingham? No distractions there ...  >:E

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

By all means go to sessions and just listen - but ALWAYS take your box with you  -  you don't have to take it out of the box,  but if you haven't got it with you, then you can't!

Yes now you mentioned it, that does sound good... Ok I will give it a try some day, when I know another few hundred tunes and can play a bit.  Or I could even go and listen couldn't I?  Thank you for the good advice.
I've been going to a couple of sessions just to listen. People get to know you, chat, and offer encouragement. You get to know the favourite tunes, so you can practice them and maybe join in quietly at the back.

mind you, that was in Bristol. Haven't found one in Birmingham yet!
