Tune of the Month for May 2017: The Bluemont Waltz
« on: May 01, 2017, 09:15:07 AM »

This month's poll winner is the Bluemont Waltz - Thanks Pete for this suggestion, which says:  Here's a nice waltz with plenty of scope for noodling, The Bluemont Waltz by Rodney Miller. Expertly played here by Matt Cranitch & Jackie Daly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb08Xm5kxcc&feature=youtu.be

ABC is available from multiple sources, so how about here; https://thesession.org/tunes/14664 which has it in a slightly more box-friendly key than the original (written in A).

PS: Here's a link to Rodney's site, courtesy of the Session page: http://www.rodneymiller.net/ where you can read about the man himself who composed the tune.

Happy playing; off to learn this one myself.

Found this tutorial today for the C#/D... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajA-rglrXdo ; is that the same Stiamh who regularly posts here? Very useful tutorial regardless of box system used; melody broken down slowly.

Just had a quick play around with it and although the original is notated in A, it's actually A-mix and doesn't have any G#s so it's surprisingly playable on a 2-row D/G (:)

Yes but can you play or fudge an F#m on a D/G? It's a pretty crucial chord if you want to play the tune in A.

The chords are in this transcription are pretty much what Jackie Daly plays: https://thesession.org/tunes/14664#setting27062

The D and A chords together get you something with the required notes in it at least, but yeah it would certainly be a bit easier on a 12 bass (:)

Transferring the video from camera to computer resulted in a lost file, so just audio this month.

Played in C on a G/C Bertrand Gaillard. I don't really see it as mixolydian, I tried a Bb chord in the second bar. Interesting.

Here's another go, much slower (but speeding up), this time in G and with video.

A pdf of the music with the bass and chords I used is attached.

Here's mine, a fair distance from the original, played in what I call Vivant mode - the rules being quite simple; get out the D/G Mory, play it in G and hold down as many bass drones as you can.

An excellent version indeed. Sean seems to be taking it in G, as far as I can tell. The box he's playing sounds like a Hohner. It's hard to tell from the distance, but might it be a Pokerwork?

Not quite. It's one of the fabled "old grey" Paolo Sopranis and it's in B/C. You could buy a lot of Hohner Pokerworks for the price that box would fetch.  ;)

Here's my go at this. Decided to do it in D just because it felt more comfortable there.
