Tune of the Month for June 2017: Eleanor Plunkett
« on: June 01, 2017, 08:11:14 AM »

Winner this month by the proverbial country mile is Eleanor Plunkett...

An O'Carolan tune, here played (and posted just recently) by Roland Carson, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nad0ZqFV0E0 . Oh, and there's this video too which autoplayed when I played Roland's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfHqoJict3o - that's just lovely, isn't it?

Lovely tune - enjoy having a go at this one.

I'm considering having a break on tune of the month this year over summer when most people are away / otherwise engaged unless there's a big upturn in interest this month, so this may be your last chance for 3 months or so. Post away while you can!

Cheers

Clive

Here's one I prepared earlier. Complete with melodeon face. I am actually a lot happier than I look! It's concentration (:)

All the best

Bill

Very nice. Two very different settings. Both strongly rhythmic. This tune is open to so many different approaches.

Here's my version played on a Hohner Erica, RH only first time through. This box was specially prepared for me by Martyn White.  ;)

Here's my shot at this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAg2ccdvUkI

Played on the Giasco I in D/G; this box just seemed to want to play this tune as soon as I tried it - like it's been looking for it's own tune for the 14 years or so I've had it, and it's just found it. Oddly, I've only just noticed that the air button on the Giasco is rubbish (it's a bar you push towards the front of the melodeon that goes right down the bass end of the box; a common basque accordion design feature, which this model is based on) - it's genuinely difficult to play the Em chord pair (which on this box is the top right pairing when you look at the box placed on its feet) and keep the thumb on the air button. I'd always thought it was hard to manage air on this thing, and that's why.

Here's my try:

I should call it "work in progress".
I agree with Chris - it is a beautiful tune.

Nicely played Roman, and that streb sound quite good actually!

Thanks all - it's end of the month, so we'll close down this theme (slightly) and open up a general one for summer. See you in a minute! Late contribs as ever, stick 'em on the end here.

Very late entry.  Decided to get hammered and forget that the camera was recording. Mistakes were made, but per another thread, I did my best to play through them and keep going.  I also recorded a couple of other tunes the same drunken night.  Comments welcome, but please keep in mind I am self taught and have no knowledge of music theory...

Thanks Tom, I really appreciate that.  It definitely starts to come undone not once but twice- still I am glad I played on rather than completely derailing in a fit of profanity like usual!

It's good you kept on playing, so you created a variation instead of stopping and starting again. You can do it! it's just not that easy to not interrupt when playing on your own.
Just watched your recording of Drunken Sailor. You can't be wrong when your sweet little daughter dances and sings to your music.

My first duet! I got in trouble with my mother for it as she was unsure the lyrics were appropriate for a 3 1/2 yr old...

I can remember my own daughter singing a song along the lines of - "bet you wish your girlfriend was hot like me, baby"... at the same age. I think you're safe.
