Theme of the Month for June 2017: Animals
« on: June 01, 2017, 08:17:42 AM »

Hi everyone - this month's theme is animals, which we can loosely interpret to include birds, fish, insects, amoeba, and more or less anything else. Any tune that even tangentially mentions those in the title is fair game!

I'm considering a summer break to tune/theme of the month this year while people are otherwise engaged, so if you want to contribute now be your last chance for 3 months or so.

Post away!

A couple of predictable one row porcine melodies from across the water. Might manage a farmyard by the time of the next theme!

All the best

There's loads of toons with 'horse' in the title, all and sundry must play this ditty:

Stretching the theme a bit (alright, a lot), a not very clearly audible Tinner's Rabbit, at Polperro Festival last Sunday. From Dartmoor Border Morris, the brightest practitioners of the Dark Art of border morris around (:)

There  my be something more apt to follow, if I get my finger out.

My attempt at JK's The Dancing Oolert.  Apparently an oolert (or woolert) is a barn owl - there you go, I learnt something today! (:)

Here we go folks, Huw Williams' wacky melodeon tune set, Pterodactyl 2 Step / Drowsy Dragon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPEmwyfxWp8

All the rage when I was learning to play was this one, the first one anyway - no-one could get their head round Drowsy Dragon - in fact I could only get my head round it this time using the ABC thoughtfully provided by Pete Dunk here: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,12194.msg151711.html#msg151711

These tunes are very much designed for the Hohner Pokerwork, and only really works on a Pokerwork with the accidentals in the 'standard' places - woe betide you if you try this on a box with accidentals tweaked.

Anyway, this was a fan favourite when Huw and Tony Williams were doing the rounds as a *fantastic* singer/guitar/bass duo. Anyone remember them? I do... and it's a shame they haven't toured for years. But through the magic of the internet, you can see them again here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GRBofcCzmc .

Enjoy,

Clive

Ha! Nice one Clive....I'd been meaning to learn Pterodactyl Two-Step for a long time, and last year took the opportunity as Huw had started playing guitar with the ceilidh band. We'd arranged it (as a surprise) in a set with "Thelma's Jig" and Jump at the Sun", and he was fine with those, but when it came to Pterodactyl he just stopped, and said "This sounds vaguely familiar, but I've no idea what the chords are..."

Maybe it's the way we play it-he looked it up on YouTube and came to a later gig where he said when he wrote it he intended it to be played slowly as he couldn't play as fast as we do (which I'm not sure is entirely a compliment...). Still, he did bring his melodeon along to one gig and played it for me as written. And the good news is he's started doing a few solo gigs again as well....

Cheers,

Stephane Delicq had two loves, the mazurka and his cats. So he wrote this piece called "Mazurchats". Apologies, it's an old recording.... https://youtu.be/DNDYZnLNCmU

That's nice to hear - I'd love to see him singing on the circuit again; one of my favourite artists ever. Just looked at your band website (as I do, nosey parker); he plays harp too? So we have in his talent list, singer, songwriter, guitarist, champion clog dancer, now harpist... and when he picks up the melodeon for a one-off number, he does one of the quirkiest, trickiest, and catchiest tune sets I've ever heard... which of course he wrote. Talented, talented man.

Oh yes...and so much more. While we're waiting to go and play he runs through something like the Cole Porter songbook from memory, and then without breaking stride suggests (and plays) tune sets for various dances based on TV themes from the 50's, or children's programmes from the 70's....

He came to the first gig that he played with us because he knew our fiddle player, and respected Sel's playing. I offered to meet up for the three of us to run through the sets, but he said he'd busk it on the night. After about 3 bars, it sounded like we'd all been playing together for years....He's been with us now for about 18 months, and seems to enjoy being part of a band rather than the front man all the time. And at one of the first gigs we did together after he'd played superbly, and at one point just changed the rhythms of a traditional Welsh tune into the jazzy style of the Hot Club of Cardiff, he turned and said " Nice box playing".

Best compliment I've ever had. I'll settle for that.

My contribution to theme of the month: Beardown Man

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NHF6K9-Zmk

I felt quite good about this, then I heard Guy's group, Cat's Claw's recording and realised how much better it could be.

I was tempted to offer The Fretful Porcupine, but in the end opted for Boxing Hares by Dave Faulkner of The Eel Grinders .

Here's my version of James Hill's Golden Eagle Hornpipe. I've seen a few versions on Irish-style boxes (B/C or C#/D) but wanted to try it on a D/G. Needs the odd accidental of course.

Les oiseaux de passage by Georges Brassens:

https://youtu.be/4pYKK86gsb4

The original version is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRdXZRZ5lkE

Brassens only provided the melody for this song, in his 1969 album "Misogynie à part". The lyrics are taken from a poem by Jean Richepin, published in 1876.
Many different bird species feature in this poem: a pigeon, a turkey, a duck, a goose, a cock, and wild birds...

Well played Roman. Must have taken some learning. Did you learn it especially for this months theme or did you know it already?

Thank you Sir. It had been on my learning list for some time but I really started for this month's theme. At least melodeon-wise: I had played it previously but only on a guitar...
