Air button ergonomics
« on: June 18, 2017, 06:15:50 PM »

The air button on my Hohner Morgane only pokes through the case by about 6mm (see attached images), which feels barely enough for confident, error-free use. I'm finding it especially fiddly and slippery in the hot weather due to sweatiness.

I think that the plastic sleeve that currently sits over the air button is glued on, so replacing it with something else may involve some cutting. I suspect that increasing the protruding bit by, say, another 6mm might give me something more comfortable and usable. Before I do anything potentially destructive, though, do any melnet users have advice or suggestions for possible ways to improve my air button?

Thanks,

Paul.

It should be possible to work the existing button out from its current position by the required 6 mm by the application of gentle brute force.

Apply a hot soldering iron to the steel below the button.  That should make it easier to move.

If the button is too short for the above mod, buy a Stradella bass button from Charlie Marshall and fit that, possibly using Superglue.

And check that the proposed air button doesn't project beyond the case feet or you'll shorten it each time you put the box down... :o

Thank you Lester, Theo, Rees and Malcolm. All good suggestions to go at there. If it hadn't been for my wife telling me to ask you lovely Melnetters I expect I would have ended up with an inferior result :)

This works really well - I've done it successfully on two Pressedwoods.
Superglue wasn't needed to secure them, just some gently applied brute force (tap, tap, tap,....)  to encourage the bass button's round hole onto the rectangular metalwork. They haven't moved since :)
