Thanks to all the members who emails me about this.

Earlier today the melodeon.net account at our web hosts was suspended because a hacker inserted code into our site which enabled them to use the server to do mass mailing of spam.  The affected part was the media wiki which ran the instrument database.   This has now been removed and I'm not prepared to take the risk of putting it back on.   

It was an interesting idea with a great deal of initial enthusiasm, though it never really got anywhere near achieving its purpose of being a resource with details of all instruments in current production.  Many thanks to all the people who did contribute, it was an interesting idea, but its going to need some hacker proof software in order to try anything similar in the future.

Yes, well done Theo. At least it's a slack time of the year so you've plenty of time on your hands to deal with these pesky problems - not!

I'm obviously disappointed to hear that, as it was my suggestion to use that platform in the first place.  Mediawiki is probably the most established and widespread wiki platform currently available, with Wikipedia it's obvious flagship, so to hear that there was a security flaw of that significance is obviously rather surprising.  Anyway, I must give my thanks to those that assisted with this in any way and particularly to Bill, who's work on it was probably not fully appreciated by many of those that used it.

The mysql database is still there on the server.  I can take a backup of the tables for anyone who is interested in continuing the project.
