Jig Dolls
« on: June 22, 2017, 01:09:10 PM »

As the melodeon is one of the insruments used for jig dolls, I wondered if there was anyone who has knowledge of where I can acquire plans to build a jig doll.  Wish to use it as a tool for school children to become involved in folk music and art.

I have commissioned Chris Harvey to make me a couple of rather special jigdolls over the years. I'm seriously thinking about getting his foot machine so that I can play and operate the dolls at the same time 😀...scroll down the webpage to see what he makes
http://jigdolls.co.uk/accessories.html

I just wish I had the diy skills to make my own jigdolls and accessories!

Hi Badger
I got a foot operated jig doll from Chris Harvey and it is superb.
Because I also wanted some more Australian models, a friend made me a copy that looks like a swaggie. The swaggie is good
but it is pretty clear that Chris has all the balance right.
I have seen online a design for 'limber jacks' - the American name - which uses flat timber rather than lathed for the body.
This means you can use the fret saw to cut out multiple pieces if that suits.
Perhaps if you google limber jacks you will get something useful.

Chris Harvey is brilliant. I sent him photos of two founder members of Bourne River Morris. Back came two very recognisable dolls with the double footplate. A real show stopper.

I seem to remember that Rennie Pickles used to play what he called "Gomersall Gob Music", ie Mouth Music.

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

I made one, in about an hour. modeled loosely on the one in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoQ39LxHRio
My jig doll body is made of pine with hardwood for the feet for better sound and 1/4 plywood dancing board.
It can be simple in construction and still sound good. I used toothpicks for pivot points( just because they worked) and cut slots for legs with a table saw. cut out body with jig saw, easy to do.  The kids that come by love it!
I did it all "by eye" as for dimensions but could give you what i did if needed.

Thanks to everyone for there helpful comments.  I am now in the process of making a jig doll.  However, I would still like to get my hands on a copy of the book.  It must be a good edition to read if they are as rare as it appears.
