Cheap Begginer Melodeons
« on: June 22, 2017, 05:35:23 PM »

Hi I am a new user here and am still searching for my first melodeon! The cheaper the better, since I'm on a student budget!

Models and/or links would be highly appreciated, thanks!

A used Hohner Erica or Pokerwork, as I expect loads of others will tell you! If you want to upgrade later you should be able to sell it on at little or no loss, cheap Chinese instruments with Italian names will be a pain to play and never be worth what you pay for them. Plenty of top pros play Hohners, so you would be in good company.

I would just say that most of us have made mistakes in buying too cheaply and realised the hard way the cost of fixing problems. It does seem more expensive to buy from those who are skilled restorers here, but the extra cash is well spent. You can also express an interest to buy a simple 2 row box here, and have a very good chance of getting something from a melnet user in good shape for a decent price.
Good luck

I normally recommend Hohners too,  but this Black Diamond is in almost new condition.  I have seen this one and played it and it plays very well.

If it hasn't already gone ... someone on the buy & sell is selling a used Saltarelle Le Bouebe for £450 ... which is cheaper than the cheapest new instrument I'd suggest ... and is actually a decent bit of kit.

Stephen, agree in general terms with most of what has been said but neither  you or anyone else has mentioned what keys the box is required to be in.

Presumably you know that there are two  fundementaly different  keyboard layouts i.e the semitone boxes the most popular of which is the BC but there ae also CC#, C#D etc etc.    The CC# boxes tend to be somewhat cheaper than the BC's  etc in the same condition

The so called 4th apart boxes, the most popular for English and morris music being the DG  but there are a whole range of others eg CF, GC  etc.

So when looking for a bargain it is essential to know  who you are going to be playing with and in what keys they are likely to play as the wrong choice could easily prevent you from joining in.

If the above is not crystal clear as is probably the case feel free to ask questions about which is the best box for what etc etc  as members of this forum will be happy to provide advice.

Buying the wrong 'type' of box even if its sounds like an ultra bargain  could well be a complete   waste of brass!
