Shock horror probe!
« on: June 25, 2017, 02:39:33 PM »

This morning Chris73 of our gang came over for a play and chat. He saw Malcolm Bebb's Koch and said "what are those three holes?" We looked closer and found many more.

Dunno why Nick's so excited. I showed it to him when I was there.

Excited's not the word Malcolm. I'm over the moon, it adds to its character.

The holes mean that they're gone now.

Afternoon NCB, to save me burrowing into the archives, ( which I'm not very good at) remind me what key Malcolm's Koch is in...

Sorry to be boring, but it is a major problem, due to global worming.....

I have it on professional authority that overnight in a domestic freezer can prevent future occurrences. I have not subjected this particular item to that process. Our present freezer is not big enough.

I will leave it to Nick if he wishes to take matters further.

Or you could train the woodworms to hold hands, and keep it together that way.

Okay Brian it's in G/C. Yes the little sods have gone Theo and Sir John. They are in fact the same moth as bookworms, they lay their eggs which become larvae and start burrowing into whatever they are interested in eating especially pearl glue or " hoof and horn" they then emerge and take flight as clothes moths and start the whole cycle...clever little buggers!
By the way, modern books don't suffer they don't like PVA  :o

If the holes are in solid wood they are most likely to be the common furniture beetle. Here is a link to Wikipedia where you can read all about the little bas****s.

Do any of the holes leak air? I worked on a Lachenal that had (had) wooodworm. It was a bit leaky and eventually I tracked it down to one of the worm holes (see what I'm doing there...you have a chance to riff on wormholes etc....). ;)

They could be Roger , but it's almost unplayable. I have it with the intention of converting it to steam punk. In fact it will be you who replaces some of the springs  8)

And in a neat way to seal wormholes is to fill them with powderd bicarbonate of soda then add superglue. It sets hard immediately and can be sanded smooth.

In a parallel universe superglue and steel wool is being used in a similar way to repair damaged concertina reed shoes

Taking an elderly Koch to Collis Bird Towers for technical advice on fabrics was a mistake for which, I feel, I will continue to pay dearly for some time.  :(  :||:

I have tried it and it's strangely satisfying. It also gets some very funny looks.
But I have yet to get around to finishing the surface. Wondering whether some colour matching is needed.

I used bicarb and superglue to repair a plastic grille (on a PA). Some bicarb is gritty and some is a finer powder. I found the finer powder worked better. Also not sure it works quite so well with the gel superglue. I think I'm saying it takes a bit of practice and experimentation to get it right. But it is amazing cos it's like concrete once it's set. I discovered the technique on the University of YouTube... (:)

Some of the walnut used on one of Emmanuel Pariselle's one-row making courses a few years ago proved to be wormy. Some of it was discovered on the course itself and was treated there and then using a suitable woodworm insecticide.

In my own case the woodworm did not become apparent until a few months after the instrument was made and I discovered some (new) worm holes in the underside of the keyboard baseplate. I disassembled the keyboard and treated it with woodworm fluid, then filled the holes with some wood dust made from sanding a spare piece of the walnut and collecting the dust. I then added some drops of superglue to the dust which rapidly set hard, then sanded the surface flush and re-varnished the wood.

I've since kept a close eye on the rest of the wood in the instrument but after four years no further worm activity has occurred, so hopefully that's it.
