Tune of the Month for July 2017: Seven Stars
« on: July 01, 2017, 11:51:39 AM »

Ok folks, for the next few months we're going to plunder the back catalogue, so to speak - revisit tunes we've done years back and everyone's forgotten!

This month's offering comes from December 2010, "Seven Stars" also known as (apparently) The Moon and Seven Stars. Are there any youtube videos out there of this one? Oh, just a few :-)

Take a look here:

http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,5476.80.html

for the original thread, and you can find an excellent tutorial by Gavin Atkin here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z53gL7OU8WE&feature=youtu.be

Off you go folks; have fun!

Cheers,

Clive

Almost missed this, Seven Stars was my very poorly recorded TotM debut in November 2010, the month I joined melnet. Seems to have been appreciated however, despite the sound quality. Hopefully this is easier on the ear..... straight and squared on a couple of 4 stops

All the best

Here we are folks; I've taken another shot at this too. We're on the Castagnari Giasco I in D/G here; a box I'm playing a lot at the moment.

It's a great tune but deceptively fiendish. I started learning this a bit late, and to be honest I'm still struggling a bit as you can see, but what with work, the village flower show and other commitments I can't see me doing any better before end of the month. So here's mine including a few warts...

I just danced in the Kirchen listening to your tune. Very good rhythm and a lovely sound from your Dino.

First time trying a TotM, and I've been working on this tune for a bit, in particular because of Gavin Atkin's lovely tutorial including multi-button presses/'wheezes', which is a direction I've been wanting to expand my playing into. I've also been trying to work on taking a tune and seeing about adding little changes and twiddles to it and seeing what directions I can go, especially so I'll actually have some performance pieces; right now I mostly just A/B forever through morris tunes. A lot of my ideas for these probably have come from other people's playing, but, I tried to put them all into a nice progression that I'm still working on. I've not been very adventurous with my bass though, just sticking to the fairly standard 3 chord trick & oompahing along.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to be consistent enough to actually play everything in a row any time soon, so, a here's a fairly straight version of Seven Stars (where I messed up the ending a bit but decided that this would be a wrap) on a (borrowed) DG Dino Baffetti Black Pearl II:

I don't really play a lot of Jigs, I actually quite like playing this 'squared', somewhat as in folkbluesnbeyond's second offering, and have been working on combining it into a set with one the other TotM's that's taken my fancy, the Morpeth Rant. I'm not 100% happy with where my video is at, but, I'm pretty sure that even if I obsess about this for the whole weekend I won't be 100% happy either, so, here we are! Thanks for everyone else who's made a video for this one (both now and in the past) because it really is nice to see other people's takes and techniques.

Yes, I "think that'll do" too!
Well played, and I like the way you use the G row to get the right chords, and without losing rhythmic accuracy.

Thank you, that means a lot to me. Only playing DG right now, and most of what I play is either in G or E minor/dorian, so, I'm used to either a fairly straight forward G playing or a cross row&bass bonanza. Picking up a few tunes for the D row & basses and bringing in that G chord has been an interesting lesson in contrast with the simpler process of using the C basses for playing in G, (and would have really cemented the need for using more than 2 bass fingers if I hadn't already hit that wall). I think I try to escape the G row almost as quickly as I can, staying on there for some air balancing purposes only really (vs Gavin Atkin's tutorial that hops off of it right away), and I should probably keep exploring its uses considering all the places you can sneak a C in to good effect for G row playing.

Thanks all - end of the month, and time for a new approach to tune of the month.... but as ever, still stick any late entries on the end here.

I enjoyed listening to your version Chris (as well as all the others). Very danceable!
