Mystery Pokerwork
« on: December 28, 2007, 02:43:30 AM »

Just got another black and gold Pokerwork.  This is an eBay find, and while it has the decorations of a Pokerwork, the place that should read "Hohner" says "Venezia."  It looks like a Hohner, plays like a Hohner, sounds like a Hohner.  But is it one?  Were they ever labeled as such?

Thanks for any insight.

Hi Jamie

Yes they were; I don't know much about them, but there is a 1930s-ish 3-row Hohner badged as a Venezia in the collection of Paul C Smith in California.  I don't know anything about him either, other than that I've run across his collection when idly surfing for melodoen-related websites.

There some pictures at  http://www.peterunbehauen.de/p/06california.html

Hope this helps

Among others, Saltarelle Pastourelle II D/G; Hohner 4-stop 1-rows in C & G; assorted Hohners; 3-voice German (?) G/C of uncertain parentage; lovely little Hlavacek 1-row Heligonka; B♭/E♭ Koch. Newly acquired G/C Hohner Viktoria. Also Fender Jazz bass, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Epiphone Sheraton, Charvel-Jackson 00-style acoustic guitar, Danelectro 12-string and other stuff..........

It does help.  The logo is identical.  The insides are "pure Hohner," as Paul C. Smith says.  It has H reeds, and the Pokerwork design is even on the back of the keyboard.  There's an pencilled inscription with a 1931 date under the grille.  The tuning still sounds good.  A little gasket material and bellows tape, and maybe new valves, it'll be ready for the world of eclectic music!

Thanks.
