Mouth organ drop-in at Whitby Folk Week
Sage Herb:
Having run beginner and intermediate workshops at the last two Whitby folk weeks, I thought that I'd do something less formal this year. So my 'drop in' is simply the chance for you to talk about playing folk tunes, discuss technical or hardware issues, and maybe play a few tunes in the key of G. (Note the event isn't aimed at blues players.) Just turn up at the Rifle Club office at 1130 on Thursday 24 August. It's programme event no 452. (Or PM me beforehand if you already have something that you'd like to cover.)
Cheers
Steve
John MacKenzie (Cugiok):
Oddly enough, my new Suzuki Pro Master in G, arrived by post, today.

Is it the valved (MR350V) or the ordinary model, John?
Steve
John MacKenzie (Cugiok):
Ordinary I'm afraid mate. I have had problems with valved harmonicas. I have a valved chromatic Hohner, and it tends to gum up very easily. Then when you blow there is a microsecond's delay, as the valve pops, before it sounds.
Sir John
Sage Herb:
I know what you mean John. There are various strategies to help with the problem, such as hatching the area round the slot where the valve touches, or cutting the valve a fraction shorter than the slot. It's almost always the blow notes that are the problem. I only use valved harps when absolutely necessary, and now make up my own from Special 20s; one advantage of this is that I valve only the notes I need, which also reduces the sticking problem.
Cheers
Steve
