Combined Tune of the Month *AND* Theme of the Month for August 2017: Waltzes
Clive Williams:
Hello all,
As mooted in the suggestions for new tunes thread, we're going to try a different format to TOTM and ThOTM this month; the idea being we have a theme, and then somewhere between 2 and 4 *suggested* tunes of that type you could try (so the suggestions become the TOTM, even though there are more than one). Vary the difficulty of those, and you have something for everyone, or people can choose to do something else completely. There's no poll - it comes down to my random choices, albeit influenced by what people put in the suggested tunes thread, but the fact you can record any of the choices, or ignore them if you want, gives everyone choice too.
So.... this month, despite what I said in the suggested tunes thread, let's do waltzes! Any waltz is fine, not necessarily just 3 time ones either. But in the spirit of TOTM, here's 4 waltzes you might consider if you haven't already got one you really want to try:
1) Valse Batignolles Clichy (as nominated below, thank you!), here's the ABC from that thread:

2) La Marianne, from the pen of Mr Fred Paris ladies and gentlemen. Guaranteed to go like a dream at at any French (or indeed English) music session up and down the land. This one has been a TOTM thread already... so there's *LOTS* of inspiration out there. http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,5713.0.html which if you go to the start of the thread, has the following ABC courtesy of Steve:

3) Valse des Jouets, written by Michel Faubert of (I think) Quebec; fits beautifully, and I do mean beautifully, on a 2 row 8 bass. Trickier than La Marianne, but worth it. Find some ABC here:
http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,19555.msg237087.html#msg237087
Here's one of my takes of this in Bb/Eb (sorry!) http://www.melodeonvideo.co.uk/2011/05/03/valse-des-jouets-played-by-clive-williams/ and also in G/C http://www.melodeonvideo.co.uk/2012/11/13/valse-de-jouets-gc-version-played-by-clive-williams-on-melodeon/ ; I'm sure there will be other versions on youtube too.
4) Sherbourne Waltz (the waltz version of Orange in Bloom) - we have a TOTM thread for this one too, here: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,3405.0.html from which this ABC comes:
--- Code: ---X: 1
T:Sherborne Waltz
M:3/4

--- End code ---
or you can still choose to learn/record something completely different if you want. In fact, if you come across anything interesting in the various festival workshops going on at this time, why not post it for us all to look at and learn?
There we go - let's give this new format a go, and see how it takes off shall we? Let's have a good pickup - have a go if you're even slightly considering it, because it would be rather a shame to let things fizzle out, wouldn't it? Use it or lose it!
Cheers,
Clive

A couple of 1 row waltzs

To get the ball rolling, here's my version of the Sherbourne Waltz on my BbEb.

Now correctly titled ( not as previously called 'Orange in Bloom' ! )

Whilst I'm in the mood, here's the Brunswick Waltz newly recorded for this month.

I've used a new to me Hohner Erika in DG. Not had it long and am still getting to grips with it hence it being a bit 'breathy' in places.
It has a full sound, and characteristics I'm not quite used to yet, but not bad for an old 'un.
The box, not me..... well, ok. Point taken ;)
cheers

Evening Glory, one I recorded a few days ago by Toon Van Mierlo.
