Saul Rose advanced melodeon workshop - Sidmouth
« on: August 15, 2017, 09:35:25 AM »

Hi,

I'm hoping someone out there in melnet land was at Saul's advanced workshop in Sidmouth last Tuesday - the day we did 'Orange in Bloom' and 'Banks of the Dee'.  If so do you have a record of any of the chord sequences you'd be happy to share.  I found I was perfectly able to play the chord changes when Saul was calling them out but obviously the workshop was far too short to memorise any of the sequences. I do have a video of Saul playing both tunes ones through at the end but it'll take me hours to unpick the chords even with a slow-downificator.

Similarly if my video can be of help to other participants I'd be happy to share.

Cheers :)

It would be brilliant to find out what happened.
It was the one thing I really wanted to attend but sadly I was dancing  so missed them all  :(
Such is life..... sigh

Yes, I also really wanted to attend, but Saul's workshops were straight after my Well Known Tunes at a Steady Pace sessions and I needed to get my breath back after two hours of playing whilst stamping out the rhythm to keep between 70-odd and 90-odd musicians in time with each other.

Maybe next time.

I'd definitely like to see the video - Sherborne / O in B and Banks of the Dee are already part of my repertoire, so a Saul Rose approach would be very interesting.

I've just checked my recorder - happily seem to have got most of the workshop so when I've recovered from manflu combined with post festival exhaustion will transcribe (or could share the mp3 which might be better-probably would have to send by email)

Yep.  We both got the annual Sidmouth cold on returning home and sleeping for 16 hours.  Worth it though  (:) :|||:

I'd like to see your video Helena, and happy to help unravel the chords if I can  :-\

I wasn't at Sidmouth, however Saul did the Orange in Bloom /Sherborne bit as a waltz at Mendlesham this year. The concept he was teaching was "smoothness" - row-crossing and keeping the bellows moving in the same direction for as long as possible.

I've attached my notes from the day, which are a bit scrappy - I was borrowing pencils from all around me.

I'd sort of forgotten this tune until it appeared in the Totm this month so I picked it up again recently but without the notes. I've done a quick cross check and my video from a couple of days ago  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KOJnBvVCt4&t=1s uses a bunch of different chords and breaks Saul's golden rule about smoothness a lot. Folk process possibly?... or maybe just getting it wrong.

apologies in advance for any confusion over wrong chords, bad writing etc.

This was one of the first tunes where I discovered how row crossing could make life easier (I know, depends on your viewpoint). I've attached an alternative version which mostly uses 'straight' chords, with just an Em alternative in the B part - nearly all the phrases can be played either on the pull or push. 'Dp' means push D basses.

Thanks Steve, that really useful. Between that and a few notes in a mobile phone app and some dim memories I have just about finished ABC-ifying the tune, happy to share once I've checked it.

Oh David, if only it was that simple :)  That is pretty close to how I was playing it before Saul's workshop, although I did develop another moany-groany  crossy-rowey version put together for playing at a friend's birthday party earlier this year.

BTW how have we managed not to bump into each other on the morris trail this year?  Most unusual.

Dunno. Was expecting to see you at Sidmouth somewhere, but we were only there for the weekend. Maybe Lewes in October?

Finally listened to the Saul Rose tapes - this is what I hear for Orange in Bloom - as Steve's version I think
A part - c g g d c d cbass/b note (rh) d g
B part g bm d em bm c d g bm c c g g d c g c d g
Banks of Dee
A part - d g c bm(passing) am d em c d g
B part - g bm c , then run mirroring rh - g a b c d e , g d c bm em d c d g d d g
I confess I lost track in second half of the B part so might well be wrong ! But it works for me anyway

Usually yes, without fail but this year I'm going to gin festival in Belgium. Will be at Swanage though, infesting the Red Lion.

Hi Julian
I was at that workshop and didn't catch all of that detail
So thank you for passing that on
