Playing the A and B parts of 'King of the Fairies' together sounds OK, with some slight adjustments. I've attached the dots.

I like playing an improvised countermelody to Playford tunes when the one tune is being played for a dance (probably what players did back in their day anyway), but I haven't written any down. Hole In The Wall and The Black Nag come to mind.

I believe improvising  "the parts" was an essential skill of the time.

Here's one of my favourite pieces, Windy Gyle by Alistair Anderson. Named after a hill in Northumberland this is in fact two tunes, a 6/8 slow air in two voices and a very fast 9/8 slip jig which sits over the top making a very pretty piece. I'll link to PDFs and performances a little later but in the meantime here are the ABCs in the original key of A but I have it in G too if anyone wants it:

PDFs of Windy Gyle in A and G. I'm trying to figure out to share an mp3 without it being downloadable . . .

The only way I could find to share an mp3 of Windy Gyle was to edit the file and chop chunks of it out, this allows you to hear how the piece builds up. Slow air on cello, fiddle plays countermelody second time through. Slip jig on fiddles, flute joins in. Slip jig with slow air on cello, slow air countermelody joins in and then all together for the big finish.

Windy Gyle in bits

The Syncopace CD with Windy Gyle on it is available from Alistair's website, highly recommended!

Two Syncopace tracks to listen to on Alistair's Soundcloud page.

Here's a countermelody to Bonny at Morn.

Thanks Pete - I shall try that tomorrow with my concertina friend !
I like that tune - here's a lovely version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9LIEYT9LzA

Just noticed a typo in bar 20 - the countermelody note should be a third lower (in GC talk that's a G rather than a B) I'll replace the files. Files in previous post now corrected.

By the way, Arty I only hear these countermelodies combined with the original in my head. I'd love to hear a quick recording of anything you come up with.

Windy Gyle

Put it on youtube and post a link to it. You need to put it into a video first.

Adieu Ma Dedee
Mon Amant de St Jean

I and my friend the concertina player, started playing Mon Amant de St. Jean this afternoon. It is sounding very, very nice indeed!
Did you write the contrechant Pete?
It is fun to play and, unlike some tunes, the harmony line is just as interesting to play as the tune.
When we have smoothed out all the wrinkles, we'll do a recording for you.

We will do Adieu ma Dedee as well but I have been putting it off, as your version is slightly different to what I learnt previously. It is always hard to unlearn things.

Thanks, Arty. Yes I did write it. It's an exercise to write - instead of a harmony line - a separate tune that will function either as a variation or as harmony line. It's surprisingly easy to write either, but not at all easy to write one which will do both jobs. Glad you like it.
