adding extra bass buttons
« on: August 17, 2017, 09:11:49 AM »

Just heard from the lady who's Mengascini I may have swapped with in France that she sold it last night, just as we're travelling down. No issues with that, as I'd have been really torn to lose the Serafini.
Is it possible at a reasonable cost to add bass buttons? Either with an extra additional reed block and mechanism or replacing the existing set, or should I just consider a new instrument?
I don't really need extra chords, just missing some bass notes for runs and cross chording.

This may be possible depending on the room available.

What tends to happen is you cut a hole in the soundboard and put a new one in with the mech you want.

Emmanuel Pariselle is your man for adding things to Melodeons. He's added stops for me, done an 18 bass Mory among many other things.

I believe Mike Robotham has added bass buttons (or perhaps 1?) to one of Ollie KIng's Hohners...

Hi Baz & Playandteach,

making a 10 or 12 bass extension to most Hohners is not a problem. But for a box such as a Serafini, I'd go back to the maker in the first place.

Other than that, as Benammi says, Pariselle is your man. He's got access to the tools and also the action mechanisms required; he is experienced at this type of adaptation and can assess what is and what is not possible. Converting a standard Mory to an 18-bass instrument + registers is no mean feat.

cheers!

Hi all,
If you put the actual mechanics of 'how to' aside, Ollie of this parish has a 9 bass '2row 8 bass'.
He's had an F# and C# added as bass notes under one button, as has Ian Dedic I think after recently discovering an old thread. As did Roger Watson too.....

Looking at p&t's original post, this is now a bit old so might no longer apply.
Cheers

Yes, sadly still not playing. But losing weight with all the additional exercise instead. One tinnitus specialist I saw said that the people who can't let go of the thing they can no longer do very often end up depressed. I, very fortunately, am a serial obsessive. I still hold out some hope that I will pick it up again further down the line.
Thanks everyone for the support.
Arty pointed out the viola player who successfully sued for loss of hearing. That is something I have no truck with. We all know about ear plugs. They ruin the playing experience and our sense of tuning, but in pits especially with Wagner you have no choice. I wouldn't change a thing about my career. Having your cake and suing is so wrong.
Thanks, though, for the comments on extra basses - still might feature in the future.

Speaking for myself and I think others as well, I hope you do also.

Having work with machinery all my working life I suffer slightly from its effects. It'd be hard to sue all the home owners I've work for - for my own stupidity of not using hearing protection. Plus I wouldn't do that anyway, anyone got a good lawyer joke? (:)

An interesting insight into orchestral life, I had no idea you used ear plugs!
Also like to add my hopes on your return, then you can research further that extra bass button  ;)
Take care

Thanks for all your good wishes. We don't use ear plugs 95% of the time, but we know the passages that are dangerous and it's up to us to make that decision. As I've said it wrecks the enjoyment, but saves your hearing. In pits life is much worse for noise than on stage. Plenty of my friends in that orchestra wear ear plugs.
I'll try to avoid further thread drift, but heartfelt thanks.

Most of the lawyers I've met were a joke.
