Too many spoiled threads because of irrelevant comments
« on: July 29, 2009, 10:38:41 AM »

I am new in this forum but an old dog in a couple of other music forums.
On the melodeon.net forums 90% of the resposes are totally off-topic. I'd prefer private messages when I wished to discuss some completely irrelevant and personal issues.
IMHO, the off-topic, irrelevant comments make an interesting/great topic very hard to read from the junk/thrash of chitty-chatty comments.
Am I alone with this observations?

Trying to stop threads going off topic is like trying to turn back the tide....impossible.  ::)

We are an on-line community.
As you say, you are new. If you spend a bit more time here you will get to know us all a bit better.

90%? Oh come, now. I think you exaggerate.

It can get a bit much sometimes, but I have to say that in general I enjoy the banter.

It makes the forum feel more like a group of like minded friends having a melodeon related chat rather than a dry academic discussion. More welcoming and inclusive. Also it allows topics to include little nuggets of information that might not be strictly relevant and would not be thought important enough for a topic of their own.

The fact that people here are good natured makes thread drift much more acceptable than some other forums where things can get nasty!

(I hope this reply is on topic by the way  ;) )

Speaking as someone who's been on forums since I could get on a PC with a net connection (about 8 years+), you will find similar situations with any friendly forum where many people know each other well. You think here suffers you should see some of the DW forums I'm on...off topic from 2nd post. :o
It got so bad once we made a off topic thread where the point was to go off-topic...surprisingly enough it sayed on topic for ages. lol!

Quite a bit of good stuff can come out of what appears at first reading to be off topic. This is one of the friendliest places I know on the www which explains why I'm on this site so much - the humour and banter is at times brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable. If threads were to keep rigidly to some prescription it'd be a pretty boring place I think - and certainly not one I'd be interested in hanging out in. I'd echo Steve's response personally.

According to the stats I'm this forum's top topic starter - and I have absolutely no complaints about what has happened to any of my topics - why should I? I've been helped, aided, assisted, humoured and enlightened beyond measure by this community - 'off' or 'on' thread.

probably the thing that makes this forum. It's friendly, witty, informative, entertaining, helpful and usually makes me smile.
Can't find anything wrong with it myself and if you have a serious question or problem there's always someone out there with an answer, that possibly friendly, witty, informative, entertaining, helpful and usually makes you smile.

See Al that could go in Forum Stats thread. ;) :P

Off topic is a grey area...one persons off-topic is another persons on-topic.....as long as you can link it back IMO to the main topic its on-topic but others have other criteria.

definately in favour of friendly meandering!  As far as I'm concerned this is a forum where everybody is  welcome  and if they don't like our  jovial way of doing things they can bugger off!

I'd say Salt & Vinegar is definitely my favourite crisp flavour but I'm partial to a packet of Cheese & Onion every now and then.

I am happy that none of the replies (at least) in this thread are off-topic ;)

you just have to realise that its like we are all sitting around the kitchen table having a friendly chat with our friends - but if we have a deep meaningful question then we will get a deep meaningful answer   ;D  ..

loosen up and keep squeezing   :|||:
