Good to see everyone (except me) has gone back to work and stopped twittering.

On the melodeon.net forums 90% of the resposes are totally off-topic. I'd prefer private messages when I wished to discuss some completely irrelevant and personal issues. Miki

>:E .. prepare to die, Earthling
Yes there is some serious(?) cyberbabble here. It only works because the group is relatively small. Personally I do wish some would trim the longer quotes (60+ lines sometimes ???) but after daring to mention it, I'm still licking my wounds.

I tend to use the (excellent) edit/modify facility to add a PS to previous post if it's a one liner. Works for me. Chris

I am new in this forum but an old dog in a couple of other music forums.

IMHO, the off-topic, irrelevant comments make an interesting/great topic very hard to read from the junk/thrash of chitty-chatty comments.
Am I alone with this observations?
Miki

I think this is because the group does two things -- it acts as an information exchange for melodeon players, and it is also a social space for us. What it doesn't really do -- and some other forums do much better -- is build up over time into a repository of information. Nevertheless, I do find the search facility very helpful when I need to find specific information.

Oh, and welcome!

Alison

Mornington Crescent.  ???
Aren't we playing Stowolski's Diagonal Rules and as such your move is illegal.
Obviously, under normal circumstances, but perfectly allowable if a previous contestant has mentioned bananas.
Damn it Sirrah, he plainly said "plantain" not "banana".

Apologies Rees, he actually said "Plantain Avenue" as his move. It is debatable whether bananas and plantain are related but I do undersdtand that there can be hearing difficulties after sex change operations. Still as long as you are happy. ;)

Sometimes I find that interesting topics make the irrelevant comments difficult to read. I think that might just be me...

Welcome to the madhouse, Miki. I'm new too and a more helpful bunch of people you'd struggle to meet. Everything you need to know is either here or will be as soon as you ask! THREE photos of the strap brackets of melodeons just to help me! THREE!!!

Oh and I'm a bit upset that the majority of this post happened when I was at work so couldn't post.

Daddy or chips??

Are there any stats for threads having the most posts in the shortest time? This must be a front runner!

Due to lack of internet today (a fairly regular occurence, caused by being one of the 0.00n% who live too far from the exchange to get broadband) I haven't had a chance to join in yet.

This is the only forum that I've ever got involved in, because it's great entertainment and very informative. Yes, there are lots of irrelevant/irreverent  comments, but they never spoil the thread. As somebody pointed out, most of the serious replies come out early on, and after that it doesn't matter. Anyone can add a post to get it back on topic if there is anything else to say.

It's the off-topic bits that make it a social thing, and quite addictive. Logging onto mel.net is more like checking your emails than learning about melodeons, although you learn a lot about melodeons as well. Everyone is mad, and many affected by MAD, which is obviously very contagious. I went for 10 years without buying a new melodeon, and since I discovered mel.net last autumn I've bought three!

Perhaps it's unfortunate that one of Miki's first threads, about Martin v Tommy, turned into a discussion about cars! :(

Well, Miki . . .

You may well not be alone in your observation (the silent majority is, well, silent), but the overwhelming response to your post suggests that you are well towards the po-faced end of the spectrum of our membership. Part of your problem is in regarding this as "another music forum". As has been pointed out, it is more than that. It is also a social network, albeit largely for a culture foreign to your own. When you consider that the great majority of contributing members of this forum belong to a nation which invented a game which can last for five days and still end in a draw, you should not be too surprised to encounter irrelevancy and flippancy here.

Most of us are not inclined to take kindly to those who cast nasturtiums on such short acquaintance. If you can take us as you find us, you are welcome, as has been made abundantly clear. If not, I'm with George on this one.

I believe the first-class game at one time lasted for seven days having been trimmed down from ELEVEN. Anyway, if I don't care for a particular thread/topic I excercise my right not to bother my best feature by reading it. However, having read this thread about threads and found it tedious, according to the ordinary rules of civilised debate I move that it does no-one any credit and blah blah blah, something else, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Pull my 'jamas up when you've finished. Still enjoy my Beltuna Sara II in the B/C flavour - the A - F# - D sequence is getting smoother you'll be pleased to hear.

I believe the first-class game at one time lasted for seven days having been trimmed down from ELEVEN.

I had an idea that there was originally no time limit on test cricket, and they kept playing until there was a result. I believe one match in South Africa went on for days and days, and eventually only ended when the England team had to get on the boat to go home.
