However, recently my enduring favorites are red wine and dark chocolate.  The darkest.

It's still a popular name in France (where they didn't have that notorious book).

Didn't one of the famous British golfers have a caddy called Fanny?

what about Musiques pour danses de Bal Folk by Fanny L'Hotte no less! and its quite a good book  as well

Steam railways and Galician bus shelters with tiled roofs. That was before they started putting up nice ones in this country - there's a lovely one in Upper Beeding that has shingles on the roof.

....a lovely one in Upper Beeding that has shingles on the roof.

Wow! What a nasty place to have shingles.

Limericks anyone?

A melodeonist from Upper Beeding
Got fed up with threads so misleading
He said it caused shingles
Which made his nerves jingle
So much, so he gave up free-reeding.

Steam railways ...

We've got one here (again) now, since the West Clare Railway finally got it's only surviving steam loco back the other week, after being restored in England. I had a footplate ride on her yesterday!  :o

Wonderful! There's a narrow gauge line that used to go from Lynton to Barnstaple in North Devon that's recently been resurrected: http://www.lynton-rail.co.uk. They've only got about a kilometre or so working at the moment, but they've got plans for the whole route.

The West Clare Railway has only had 2km operating, but now they've got their steam engine back (at last!) they're going to re-lay the track from Moyasta Junction (where they're based) the few miles along the coast into Kilrush - then they'll really have something worth shouting about!

Meanwhile, their old diesel loco has gone to Kerry, making it possible for the Tralee and Dingle Light Railway to start operating again yesterday.

That would be Nick Faldo's caddy, Fanny Sunesson but she was Swedish not French.

A dodgy old geezer called Al
Thought he'd play a daft trick on his pal
So he changed all the reeds
In his mate's favourite squeeze
But it all backfired because his mate ran off and invented zydeco

I hate Limericks!  >:E

Sorry to go 'off topic', but does anyone know why the French navy have numbers on their hat-bands?
The notes that are nearest ones knees
Are the ones least likely to please
   For jigs or for reels
   Those higher-pitched squeels
Make ones box sound a bit of wheeze.

Last time I heard that joke (a few decades ago) it was about General de Gaulle's hat
