3-row, C System Shand Morino
« on: August 22, 2017, 08:44:16 AM »

I was recently visiting with my repair guy and he played a 3-row Shand Morino that he owns for me.

When I asked him how it was tuned, he said it was a C system tuning and played a button on the outside row that he said was C, then the next button along on the middle row that was clearly a half-tone higher and then the next button along on the row closest to the bellows that was a half-tone higher still.

When he said this was a C system tuning, was that just another way of referencing B/C/C#?

I've never played anything other than my Club box, so forgive my ignorance if this is a somewhat obvious question for the oldtimers here.

C System (or B System) usually refers to a Continental Button Accordion.

This is what I thought, so was surprised he said it was a C system, although it's a Shand Morino.

I thought they were all tuned to the typical Scottish B/C/C# configuration.

Was the tuner Ivor Hyde by any chance? . I have had a go on his C system shand morino a few years ago.  The story is that Bells the big London accordion dealer ordered 6  40 button Shand Morino's set up as continental chromatic 3 row C system boxes instead of diatonics.  Apparently 3 went to America and the whereabouts of the other three are known.

I think there have been at least two converted from diatonic to C system  since then and possibly one was by jimmy Shand jnr who plays continental C system 5 row .

hope this throws some light on it!

It was indeed Ivor. :)

What a player, too! Wow!

Thanks for your input. That explains a lot. If I had all the money in the world, I'd like to try a C system, 3-row for a while.

The one and the same. :)

He plays well here, but was better on the day I heard him - I wasn't filming him. ;)

3 row continental C system boxes (not Shand Morino's) can be had  fairly cheaply ( certainly by melodeon standards)  as the 4 and 5 row  are more popular.

have a look on ebay but keep in mind there are C system and B system.  both play same both ways but have a different  button layout . each has its folowers and the end result is the same.  C sytem most popular in uk and france b system in most other counties .
if starting from scratch on a acontinental it doesn't really matter which system you get.

try ebay

Such as this, for instance?

Interesting. A project for the future. :D

Thanks.

and the seller is reputable

not that I would encourage anyone to leave 'melodeonland'    but there is of course no reason why you can't play both

Thanks. I've got my hands full with the melodeon for now, but I'm always open to challenges for the future. :)
