Help needed near Lincoln
« on: August 27, 2017, 10:08:33 AM »

Hello melnetters
I bought a melodeon on ebay yesterday despite it being advertised as a piano accordion. I didn't notice that it was collection only and the seller is unwilling to post. Is there anyone who lives in Lincoln and is willing to collect and post for me. Obviously all costs and responsibilities are mine? Pete

That looked like a canny buy, Pete. You've obviously caught the M.A.D. bug at your meeting with those dodgy blokes in Newcastle. Good luck with your quest.

I can't help with the collection I'm afraid, though I used to have family in Lincoln, but I was watching that one too. Quite an early Corso by the look of it, so there's a good chance it'll be C/C#.

The seller doesn't want to use PayPal either, saying ***Buyer to pay cash on collection if possible - would prefer nto to be paid via PayPal***

I saw that one too and asked if I could arrange a courier to collect  but the answer was a polite no.  I don't think sellers realise who much they depress the final price when they insist on collection only.

Where do you live? Not going to get involved with packing and post, I'm afraid, but along with loads of other Morris dancers I'll be in Lincoln next Saturday.

I live in Hexham. Not far from Newcastle.  Can easily get to Theo for example. Quite understand the hassle of packing and posting. I do have a possible diversion opportunity on the Saturday coming on the way home from the South of France but the thought of asking my family to add to the 17 hour drive to divert to Lincoln will come at a cost. If there's a plan B I'd jump at it.

Lincoln is a lovely city, and the Cathederal is spectacular, well worth a visit.

Been there, done that bought two wardrobes. No time for a rematch just now. Trying to persuade family that during a 17 hour drive an extra 45 minutes or so is no big deal.

It's less than 5%, well worth it for a melodeon for any sane person  (:)

As Theo says, Lincoln's a lovely city, but you may not be in the mood to appreciate it on a long drive. Doesn't look like the Morris event would be much help - I don't think any of the sides come from as far north as you are.

Looking like family ok with diversion. Seller has given me an opt out which I haven't taken. Thanks for the support so far but unless seller is suddenly not able to meet on the Saturday that is what we're going to do.

Good, that's much better than being labelled a "Time waster" on eBay.

Box now collected. Still en route home so no idea what key or system it is. Only thing I had time to notice was the left hand chords didn't have the usual pair of same on both directions. Didn't check right hand for semitone or 4ths apart.
More later.

With that early style of grille, and that colour, it should have a wooden keyboard too - so the key system should be stamped into the wood if you flip it over and look at the end that's not normally in sight...

Glad you got it!

Am I the only one who hasn't seen the box? What'd you get P&T?

Now I'm home I can tell you it's a two row Hohner, possibly Corso as I can see the remains of an SO transfer on the bottom end. C.C# box - I guess the chords are right for that set up -
Inside row G push, F pull, E push, Am pull.
Outside row Db push Ab pull, C push, G pull.
Condition is fair, but the usual things need doing - button travel, retaping bellows on lower end, pretty tight though.
Haven't looked inside yet, some valves obviously on bass end.
Not sure what to do - might consider using the C reeds, and adding G reeds to make a travel GC that isn't so precious. It will clean up well, and has nice amounts of wear.
Ideas anyone?
