2 Bass or 12 Bass Sag'né
« on: August 27, 2017, 04:54:46 PM »

Hello all! After years of playing a one row/ spoon bass melodeon, I'm planning on buying a 15 key Sag'né, but have the option of 2 bass or 12 bass. I play primarily Irish/Québécoise music but also various other genres, including waltzes- and playing with Bluegrass/Cajun musiciens as well. What is your recommendations, pros/cons for either bass setup? Thank you!

Depends on the music you want to play on your new box I would guess. The 12 bass should be flexible in terms of chords you can use, but will likely be heavier making for a less responsive instrument for Irish or Cajun. If you think you'll use the new basses, by all means go 12 bass, otherwise 2 bass for speed and dexterity. Didn't know there are 12 bass Sag'ne's, by the way. Neat.

If you go with 2 basses you will have a simpler/lighter box.  Irish, Québecois and Cajun are often played with few or no chords anyway.  Have you missed the chords until now ?  You could get a Hohner Corona or similar box on the side to explore 12-bass.

I'm sure that I read on here that someone had got one of these beauties with two bass ends; the best of both worlds.

The 12-bass version has bass notes only - all 12 notes of the chromatic scale.

I have a 15 button Sagné. As others have said, the 12 bass is bass notes only, no chords.
However, I ordered the 12 bass and received both the 12 bass and the 2 bass.  Just 2 screws and you can convert from one to the other.

I've found the 12 bass difficult to get used to but it's worth it for some tunes.
Having said that I use it for some English and some Quebec tunes and find that I don't use the bass end much for the Quebec repertoire.

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Here's one of my first tries -

Brilliant playing here by Marie Jeanne Brousseau -

But unfortunately neither of theses helps you with choice of left hand.

I had the instrument at Folk East last year and at Sidmouth this year. Both Rees Wesson (of this parish) and Martyn Banks (Oakwood) took the opportunity to look inside and John Spiers had a play and was suitably complimentary. He managed to find his way around the 12 bass after a bit of experimentation.

Ah.... I think I saw one on the Squeezebox stall at Sidmouth, with Bob of this parish explaining to me there were 'bolt on' alternative ends to the beastie.
Didn't I bump into you too Mitch whilst Bob was drooling?
I remember thinking 'How inventive'!

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

I went with Marcel's standard layout for a D box -

Push/pull F/D# A#/G# F/C G#/D# A#/C

It makes it fully chromatic in 2 octaves but to do this the G#s are in opposite directions in the 2 octaves.  There are no reversals, which I like on a 2 and a half row box but this is essentially a one row with extensions to allow you to move into adjacent keys or to use accidentals rather than to play legato or play chords.

Thanks Mitch it's good of you to take the time to answer I do have a few more questions if that would be OK
Do you have the B on the draw first button? or the A reversal?
How are you finding incorporating the accidental row in your playing?
Is there anything your thinking you might have laid out differently?
Anything else you think might be useful info if someone was considering one of these?
Thanks for sharing, its a great bit of kit for sure. All the Best mory

Yes, I have a B on the first button not an A.
The accidentals are generally near their diatonic partners, moreso in the bottom octave, and I'm finding them easy to use.
They are different from my 2 and a half row boxes but I'm developing a different repertoire on this box so it's not really a problem.  The video link earlier in this thread uses some of the accidentals but at that time I hadn't got to grips with the left hand. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tD0_V-we2M ).

I did think for a while that an A reversal for right hand A chords or a G reversal for G chords might be useful but I think that would destroy the chromatic possibilities.

The box comes with a thumb strap and brackets for shoulder straps. I know that most Quebec players play with the thumb strap and often angle the box forward. I find that a bit difficult, perhaps because its not what I'm used to but maybe because this is quite a heavy box.  So I use shoulder straps which gives a minor problem - the carrying case, a well padded maple construction, hasn't quite got room for the straps while they're attached.  I have to undo one end. I was looking on the instrument stalls in Sidmouth a for a suitable rucksack case but couldn't find one the right size!
