Rollo's Waltz... recorded at Whitby 2017
« on: September 01, 2017, 08:21:44 AM »

Hi All

In mid-August, I had just played this tune at the back of the Oxhenham Arms (Dartmoor Folk Festival) when I was approached by Gareth Wilkins who wanted to make a YouTube video about it.

I wrote the tune in memory of my Grandson Rollo who died at the age of 10 weeks, due to Cot Death.

Gareth caught up with me at Whitby, 10 days later, and here is the result. (It's not often you hear a harp/melodeon duet!)

Cheers,

John

What a lovely way to start the day! Thank you for that - a sad, sad story but a beautiful tune to remember poor Rollo. Love the harp and the melodeon together. More please!

A beautiful tune, John, with such a poignant history. I love the combination of the melodeon and the harp.

That was magnificent!  Really enjoyed the entire video- and the tune itself.

Imagine my surprise to find "Rollo's Waltz" on melnet; only to find that it was a diffierent tune. Backstory: my father and grandfather were both named Rollo. After my father died 25 years ago, my sister composed and recorded a tune she named in memory of our father. " Rollo's waltz.  It is a cajun style. Occassionally I hear someone play this. Here is her version:

I played along with your youtube video version  and may try these as a medley.

Fabulous! Such sentiment and such warmth that really shines through. A lovely tribute to Rollo, John.
The harp/melodeon combo is truly delicious.
