Noticed on eBay
« on: September 07, 2017, 05:03:40 PM »

This looks like a smasher for anyone who knows their way around the Stradella bass system, and not much interest so far. I'd love to have a try, but I think I'd pay very dearly for it, eventually! (If you know what I mean.)

Possibly a B/C/C#. The Sainted John Kirkpatrick plays a Casali B/C/C#

Plus it's in Scotland home of the B/C/C#

Except it only seems to have two rows on the treble side.  Almost certain to be a semitone system, most likely BC.

... it's in Scotland home of the B/C/C#

Also home of the B/C with Stradella basses, going back 100 years...

This looks like a 1950's one, and very tall to so as to fit in a 3 x 12 bass mechanism.

Hobgoblin had another Casali one for sale, last year.

Must be the time of year as I've just spotted a very similar accordion made by Orfeo on Gumtree, if anyone fancies a drive to Wishaw :)

All those pictures and not one showing the bass layout.

Risking being wrong again but it looks to be a fairly standard 12 x 3 stradella, so all 12 notes as bass, major chord, minor chord.

Further to the above B/C/C# country comments, I'm from Arbroath in Angus (Scotland!). Interestingly, the last couple of old 3 row/48 bass boxes I have purchased at auctions up here have turned out to be C/C#/D tuning. One is a MMMM treble side set up! They are quite a bit older than the Casali on eBay however and will date to the 1920's I think.
Shame the Casali is so far away from me or I could have gone and had a look for you potential bidders.

Nice thought and I'd happily return the favour for anyone finding a box near Hexham. I've been looking for more basses, so this is worth a punt if it stays on the cheap side, as I'd need to switch it to GC.
The Corso would have been too big a job to convert just to end up with the same basses - it looks like I've sold that on, so I'm still left with a project to find.

absolutely agree!   the 'stradella' layout is entirely logical  and only has to be learned for one key. To get the bass for other keys you just start somewhere else and do the same.  also bass is entirely independent of bellwos direction being used for treble notes.Don't be put off by  36 buttons.  For what its worth  the same simplicity applies to anything up to 120 bass  , which just adds more chords but again repeats in all keys.

This makes it an absolute doddle  compared with  loads of cross rowing on the treble to get  directional coincidence with something like  harmonising bass.

The box in question looks very much like a 2 row treble 3 row bass version of my 3 row treble 4 row bass casali  and I would think it most likely to be a BC.

Possibly the other 2/3 - seeing the Hohner tutor book for the "British Chromatic System" makes me wonder if it's not a C/C#.

Further to the above B/C/C# country comments, I'm from Arbroath in Angus (Scotland!). Interestingly, the last couple of old 3 row/48 bass boxes I have purchased at auctions up here have turned out to be C/C#/D tuning. ... They ... will date to the 1920's I think.

The 1920s is a plausible date for C/C#/D boxes, seeing that I have a 1928-9 catalogue listing them as "2 rows C and 1 row D ... English Scale", and I've a couple of Hohner ones from the 1930s that are marked C/Cis/D, though all of those have 12 diatonic basses.

But pitch can be a confusing issue with boxes from that era, which were not made at A-440 pitch, and are often (in an old British pitch) more than half a semitone sharp - so that people tend to assume they're a bit flat of the keys a semitone higher than they were meant to be when new. I've often encountered this with high pitch C/C# boxes that get described as C#/D, whilst Nils Nielsen once tuned a pre-WW1 10-key Hohner of mine to C# (how useful is that? :-\) when it was in old German (half a semitone flat) pitch D. Old pitches can really confuse matters, and even the best of tuners!

<diversion>One-row boxes in C# were not uncommon among older musicians in Québec (I am told, have never come across one) due to the influence of a well-known player (whose name I forget) whose recordings were in that pitch. But come to think of it, maybe his machine was just what you describe. </diversion>

I'd expect one with Stradella bass to be B/C, but you can get a surprise sometimes...

Whilst I'm now waiting on tenterhooks to find out the key of a late-'40's/early'50's, 23/8 Delfini that's on its way to me. I'd say it's odds on that it'll be C/C#, though there's a good chance it could be B/C, or posssibly G/G#, D/D#, or even (if I'm really lucky, but I very much doubt it) C#/D.   ???
