Nils Nielsen once tuned a pre-WW1 10-key Hohner of mine to C# (how useful is that? :-\)

<diversion>One-row boxes in C# were not uncommon among older musicians in Québec (I am told, have never come across one) due to the influence of a well-known player (whose name I forget) whose recordings were in that pitch. But come to think of it, maybe his machine was just what you describe. </diversion>

Well this one had a large letter D stamped into the keyboard end...

(So Nils did it again, to the right key - and I still have it.)

I've been looking for more basses, so this is worth a punt if it stays on the cheap side, as I'd need to switch it to GC.

But bear in mind that the box (at 14"!) is very tall, to fit a piano accordion bass machine into it - which (along with all those reeds) is going to make it heavy, as well as cumbersome, to play as a G/C...

It'd work (for some people) as a B/C, but I wouldn't fancy it as a C#/D!  :o

Thanks for the advice.

And rememembe Playandteach how you found you could not get a piano box to sound like a melodeon?  Well any stradella bass will sound more like a PA and less like a melodeon.

I'm not sure I've managed to make the melodeon to sound like a melodeon yet. I've bid a modest amount, so I'll be happy to get it at that price, and not worried if I'm outbid.
I do want more basses, though.

Another diversion, but, since this is not a "For Sale" listing, I'm assuming that's ok. Michael Sheehy does an amazing job of playing genuine Sliabh Luachra music, on a piano accordion, on his Cat's Rambles CD - http://www.veteran.co.uk/VT160.htm

He was born in the UK and learned the music from his father, who had emigrated from Sliabh Luachra. I don't know how he does it, but it sounds just like a C#/D box, played by a master.
