Easy tango for d/g
« on: December 20, 2017, 12:22:57 PM »

Anyone recommend an easy Argentinian tango to learn (with dots if possible !) Maybe I've been watching 'Strictly' too much, but I feel the need for a New Years Eve party piece which I can ham up spectacularly...!
I'm not certain I can manage the wonderful 'Masochism Tango' by Tom Lehrer...but it might be worth the pain  >:E

The Isle of Capri, can be played as tango. It's actually somewhere between that and a Foxtrot. However, it's quite easy to play on a D/g box, and with a bit of elision, it can even be played on a single row.

I have used  isle of capris as a tango and with a bit of lateral thinking followed it with ken john peel! it works!  One you have got a first tune that fits a tango is just a question of finding another that you can follow it with keeping exactly the same rhythm/timing/phrasing etc

Jimmy Shand recorded  a set, which I find quite fascinating, for the 'palais glide'  dance    skilfully adapting the tunes  The road to the isles, Swanee river and ken john peel to fit this once very popular ballroom dance.

I composed one by accident then forgot how to play it.

Isle of Capri sounds good to me. Thanks - excellent suggestion. Might have to resort to DYKJP unless I can work out Hernandos Hideaway to follow...!

I remember Dave Swarbrick introducing his tune Carthy's March at one concert. He said he dreamt the tune one night, but when he tried to play it the following morning it was too difficult to play, so he had to go back to bed to re-dream it!

I've attached the dots for the first part of Hernando's Hideaway to suit a D/G box. When played with max hamming up no one would notice if the D notes were sharp or not. Should be played with lots of bellows waving and histrionics :)

"I composed one by accident then forgot how to play it."

Apologies for not getting the quote in blue... I don't know how to manage that... However I do remember the tango that ladydetemps wrote and I played it for a while. It was a lovely tune and I think called it was called  "Grey day" but that might be so wrong... a lot of things have passed by since then...I think there was a recording somewhere on this forum....anyone remember? need some help on this one.

'tis  easy. Click "Quote" (top right in the post). Delete what you aren't commenting on and make your comments beneath the /quote, in square brackets, at the bottom. You can insert further quotes by scroling down to the relevant comment and doing the same thing again (except it's "insert quote", instead of "quote").

Pueblos by Stéphane Damanio is in Em, and plays mostly on the D and G rows.   I have a third row … playability on 2 might depend on where your accidentals lie. The underlying riff is spectacularly good .. so just improvise!  It is designed for that

This is Stef (piano) with J-P Serzier. The vide starts late  - theme is at the END  https://youtu.be/gTehizSiPHQ

This is Anne Niepold with Pignol on a teaser (Pueblos starts at 1'20")  https://youtu.be/k28YV4ci2Qc

Too late for this year but the Sloop John B lends itself to all those latin American rhythms with loads of room for ornamentation.
