Upstart Crow
« on: September 18, 2017, 10:44:00 AM »

I feel sure someone has spotted this before but I can't find a reference to it - has anyone noticed that the theme music to 'Upstart Crow' is Jamaica from Playford?

You're right. Paul Mottram gets the credit for it.

Ah yes I noticed this when I first watched the show. I thought "Well that actually sounds accurate for the period", so went to look it up, found the name, and then had a look in my copy of Playford.

Which is when I found out that my copy is missing roughly 20 pages containing half the best tunes, including Jamaica >:(

I was wondering why I would have missed such a great tune from that book. The playing on the title of the show is rather nice too!

The well-known 'Rogue's March' is simply 'Jamaica' turned into a 6/8 march. It'll be under everyone's fingers......

Just seen his name on the TV credits. Not only slow, but slow witted too it seems.

Right at the start of the show as the cartoon graphics roll up, you'll see Morris Dancer - William Kemp

Who started the trend of people spending nine days getting to Norwich only to wonder why, then buying a country cottage to avoid wasting the trip.

Known rurally as 'bl@@dy Kemp' by those who lean toward the Kipper view of such invasion  ;)

"people spending nine days getting to Norwich only to wonder why"

Richard, I'm astounded that such a wise chap as yourself couldn't see the main reason for this........surely (before Parcelforce, obviously) it was the only way to acquire all the used instruments with which to accompany the likes of Mr Kemp in his dancing?

I though Mr Kempe provided his own music, on the pipe and tabor.

Perhaps Edward, there was a well established excise duty free 'pipeline' for desirable things and commodities and of course we have long been famous for the quality of our reeds (numerous reed-mongers keep large stocks seasoning on their roofs)

It is a long while since I read a nine dais wonder Greg but Kempe seemed to get the modern superstar treatment along his route with plenty of jam sessions, as well as his own efforts between populated areas  ;)

I seem to remember that Kemp was accompanied on pipe & tabor by one Thomas Slye.

Interestingly, 'Jamaica' also made an appearance in the Christmas screening of 'Victoria' on itv. It's played by musicians I didn't recognise (and didn't appear in the credits) when Victoria & Albert go below stairs to attend the servants ball (about 50 mins into the programme). There is a second tune under the dialogue I can't quite recognise, & then the scene finishes with 'Portsmouth'.

I think the second tune is Hey Boys, Up Go We from 1st edition Playford. (Originally Cuckolds All in a Row but re-named by Playford).
