Pokerwork from China or Germany?
« on: September 26, 2017, 11:24:27 PM »

Just picked up this apparently fairly recent G/C Pokerwork from someone in my neighborhood for $235. The gent's mom was a folk musician, left him with a bunch of instruments when she passed away.

It's like brand new, is airtight, and plays well in tune across both rows and the basses.

I'm guessing it's built in China, but was wondering if anyone might be able to tell for sure.

The bar behind the pads is an interesting way to limit the key travel but results in clicking on every key. I wrapped it in thin leather after these photos, no more clicking!

Here's the leather wrapped bar to eliminate the clicking, sealed with double-stick foam tape.  Restricts the opening of the pads about 1 mm so makes it a bit softer, but that's not a bad thing. :-)

By the colour of the gold paint (allowing for camera error) I'd say it's a German one.

Not one to disagree but the pallets and pallet facing say Chinese to me and the treble mechanism seems to be held in with cross head screws which also says Chinese.

Is there any imprint on the back of the keyboard designating  "Made In Germany"  ?

Is there a "shadow" of the imprint under an over-sprayed keyboard. ?

By the colour of the gold paint, bellows tape colour, front grill,my guess is one of the last German production..gold paint on the body and colour of the blow paper is very bright  on Chinese production.

With that method of restricting the action travel, a heavy fingered and vigorous player would likely 'sink' those buttons down.

I’m pretty sure it’s Chinese. For the reasons Lester gives, and the German fingerboard is high gloss, (with “made in Germany” on the back) and this one has the matt finish typical of Chinese Hohners.

I seem to recall some from the changeover period where the matt black seemed to have been applied to cover up the gold "Made in Germany" that was already on the back of the keyboard...

Could it have been built in China using German parts?

Otherwise, I don't think I've ever seen a serial number on the soundboard of a German-made one.
