Unrecognised symbol - what to do?
« on: October 02, 2017, 12:38:36 PM »

Hi Gang,
I'm transcribing a tune and at the start of the next bar I've just come to it has a symbol that looks like the figure three - '3' -  across the stave.
1. I have no idea what it means!
2. what do I do with it?

cheers
Q
who until now has been transcribing merrily for a beginner!

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Lester, the image is Alto clef, move the middle of the 3 up to the next line for Tenor clef (it's a movable C clef, where the middle of the 3 is, is middle C).
If the part Q is transcribing from is a cello part or bassoon part then it could be Tenor clef. Or it could be an older copy of vocal writing that changes clef.
Any chance of an image Q? It could be other things - especially if hand written e.g. a repeat bar can look like that in some manuscript. Or  crotchet rest. Or it could be short hand for a change of time signature.

with a "z". The length will be the same as with notes so if your length is L: 1/8 then you would do z2 for a crotchet

Q

In ABC, to notate a rest, use a lower case 'z' followed by the note duration value.

So in your example, that bar would look like:
z2 e2 c2 e2

(This assumes you have your header L: field set to the default, i.e. L:1/8)

delatasalmon and Steve - great!
Yes I discovered it was a lower case 'z' after creating a bar in the middle of the bar using a capital Z!
A small 'z' makes the right symbol in the music.
Thanks both.
Sorted. Tune looks like the manuscript. Learnt something else too which is all good stuff.
thanks all
cheers
