playing Em on G/C
« on: October 05, 2017, 07:20:30 AM »

I notice that playing in Em seems to work well on my D/G box. I've also noticed that Cyrille Brotto seems, on his youtube video of Mazurka des Ecoliers,  to be very handily playing in Em  on what appears to be a G/C box. It appears to have Em on the push bass and chord buttons (fourth from the knee, inside row). Is this normal? Are G/C boxes normally well suited for playing in Em? Am I mistaken that this is a G/D box that he is using?
Thanks for any comments!

He's playing on a G/C box. Playing in E minor on a G/C box is like playing in B minor on a D/G box. It uses the same fingering/bellows patterns.

B minor on a D/G box is slightly non-intuitive at first, often involving some cross-row fingering patterns, but once you get used to it, it is a great key to play in. It sits nicely in the middle range of the keyboard, not too low nor too high.

I've attached a Bm tune from one of my Witney 2014 workshops. The tablature for the tune shows which buttons and bellows directions to use.

Claims to be B Dorian but is actually B Aelioan.
(Sorry for the nit-picking diversion)
... And a superb example of a tune that works in B minor on a D/G melodeon, in fact can't be played in any other key!

Thanks for this piece, Steve. As you can see from the amount of downloads - this sort of shared resource seems to be something we should be doing more of.

Being a bit topical, how do you chord this?  (I've mainly heard it sung unaccompanied, but there are some pretty elaborate arrangements out there).

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Thanks - that pretty much confirms my guess of how to do it.  But the Canadian heavy metal group that covered it must have been doing something more complicated - I wonder if you can get any fancier while still keeping it playable on a melodeon?

Thanks Steve! I've not yet tried any thing in Bm on my D/G. Only been playing it a few months, and it has no bass stopper.
I'm asking because i'm thinking of maybe buying a G/C.
Can anyone tell me how to open attachments on this sight. It seems that when I click on the staple, it just opens the same page again?
Thanks

I tried to play it the 1st of october with slightly different chording in the first measures. Yes, you can make it fancier, but I think it depends on your personal preferences, up to which measure fancier sounds better.  (:)

I don't know about normal - this is me after all  >:E but I have the Em. I did ask for it, but equally Bernard Loffet said words to the effect of "well, duh!" when I tentatively suggested it.

On a G/C, it's often an E major, needed for playing any number of French A minor tunes with G♯s in them.
So I'd expect the E minor to be less usual.
(I play IYWNHMYMLMG with thirds out anyway - sounds better on my DB)

Sebastian - that's great.  Really expressive and dignified.
