Tune of the Month for November 2017: Elizabeth Clare
« on: October 31, 2017, 09:47:45 PM »

This month's winner; Elizabeth Clare, a lovely waltz written by one of my favourite composers (I have a lot of favourite composers), Chris Wood. Courtesy of Pete, here's some ABC:

Code: [Select]
X:63
T:Elizabeth Clare
C:Chris Wood
M:3/4
L:1/8
R:waltz
Q:1/4=130
K:G
D GA|:B3 B cB|A2 B3 A|G2 E2 D2|D3 D GA|
[1 B2 d2 e2|d2 B2 G2|d2 c2 B2|A3 A GA:|
[2 B2 d2 e2|e2 d2 B2|A2 G2 F2|G3||
|:G Bd|e2 d3 B|c2 B3 c|d2 c2 B2|A3 G AB|
c3 c dc|B2 c3 B|A2 G2 E2|D3 D GA|c3 B cB|A2 B3 A|
G2 E2 D2|D3 D GA|B2 d2 e2|d2 c2 B2|A2 G2 F2|G3:|

... and here's Lester's version, played in the original key of F.

A beautiful tune, simple yet memorable.

Have fun!

Cheers,

Clive

I don't know how people feel about this, so let me know if you want the link removed.
I found the Chris Wood, Andy Cutting track, cut Elizabeth Clare off the end and transposed it up a tone to G for me to learn.
I've put an unlisted link on youtube only available here for people to learn from, and I'll take it down at the end of the month.
With all file conversions, some audio quality has been lost, but this is just for me to learn from (and others here).
Elizabeth Clare, By Chris Wood and Andy Cutting in G

I had to put a photo on for youtube to take it, so this is a fuzzy photo I took of my wife on Mont Blanc in our mountaineering days - it looks better if you have a very small screen size setting.

The missing link from Clive's post
Might just be me? But every time I try the link I get my YT home page.
Is it working for others?

Edit P&T"s link is working for me

Enjoyed hearing these. Interesting to hear the tune in a one row too.

Nicely done Pete, I'll be using my Sander too - so it'll be interesting to see the difference in generations (instruments, that is).

Thanks.  I saw you also had a Sander now.  I actually prefer the sound of my Sander to my Handry.

I'm specially interested in the one-row part, as I got a Hohner one-row 4 stopps in C some days ago. Here's my try:

I reckon I should be considerably lighter on the bass-button. :o

Nice I do like the way you use the basses on the Hohner Bb/Eb and the tone.

I always thought this was an Andy Cutting tune. On the performances I've heard Andy plays it as a coda to Chris singing Hares on the Mountain and Chris backs him up.

The original recording of these two tunes is on the Chris Wood and Andy Cutting CD 'Lusignac' (R.U.F. CD04). The sleeve notes attribute both 'Hares on the Mountain' and 'Elizabeth Clare' to Chris Wood.

Interesting. The credits I have seen just treat them as a single piece of music. Could the credit to Chris Wood be an error arising from a failure of the publishers to be specific?

Why would you think that? R.U.F. recordings were/are Chris Wood and Andy Cutting's own record label so I'm fairly certain they would have got it right. Here's a scan of the relevant portion of my 'Lusignac' CD sleeve insert. I think it's pretty clear the tune is by Chris Wood. If there's any remaining doubt, you could always ask Andy Cutting. He reads this forum occasionally.

I'm sure you're right. Just speculating. The crediting there is clearly how you described it, not how I've seen it elsewhere.
